What I have found is that when a debate does ensue over using a second bottle to extend a dive, it cannot be referred to as a pony bottle, hence the name "stony" bottle which is a combination of stage + pony. Yes I know it's not really a stage bottle when used in that fashion either but the pneumonic indicates that the bottle has some sort of mixed use purpose.
So you use it to extend dives - which isn’t what a pony is for - so you won’t call it a pony…and it’s not a stage bottle either…so you make up a silly name for it that no one else uses. That way when you’re challenged on how you use it you can claim some unique, totally fine justification because “hey, it’s a “stony” tank” which is really just a meaningless term.

Can you read? Or are you so busy saying how great you are and better than everyone else that you don't pay attention to anything other people write?

Serious question. I'm guessing it's a bit of both but I'm going to take a moment to properly educate you, no need to thank me.

My air consumption was not mentioned anywhere in this thread, but I'll provide it now. SAC rate is about .45 on most dives (AI computer provides the data). I occasionally choose to extend an interesting dive using the stony bottle, not because I "sucked the tank down" as you incorrectly surmised, but simple bd suds I ...wait for it... want to stay down longer.

At no time during the dive do I have less gas then typically recommended minimums. I alternate between the tanks always leaving a sufficient reserve brteeen the two.

After having to explain myself and clear up your bizarre misconceptions and incorrect assumptions I understand why that other diver no longer cares to dive off your boat.
you appear to have a stunning lack of self awareness.

I appreciate when someone challenges me, I welcome a healthy debate. I'm good with how I dive, I try to explain my reasoning with long, detailed factual posts. I listen to the counterpoints made by others and consider whether or not they make sense and might be a better way of doing things. I created a funny meaningless name for my unique way of using the stony bottle because- and there are threads here to support this- the challenges evaporate if I call it something else.

This really pisses me off. My freaking therapist says the SAME thing. WTF am I paying HIM for if you can diagnose me for free? I just called and canceled next week's session.

Dr Allen, do you take Aetna?

@Allen-1

He is been extremely sarcastic and disrespectful, you shouldn't let him get away with it.

@LI-er, the endless stream of rebuttals, arguments and contradictions justifying the total disregard for the vast majority of the strongly suggested alternatives, emphatic mandates and downright direct orders are highly amusing. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD!!! I assume you inspired homicidal thoughts from your teachers on a daily basis (I certainly invoked those feelings from mine). My only advice to you is spend less time on freaking SB and enjoy life in Greece. I'm taking my own advice starting now. Cheers!

I am enjoying it, very much. This year has been filled with adventure, local and abroad, to places including Egypt, Thailand, England, France and Micronesia (Truk Lagoon).

We just got back from Australia and in 3 weeks I'm headed back to the US for the first time since we moved here a year ago which was right after my last day of work. We spent this past year renovating our new villa and that's just about finished. The weather has been a bit cold, and being retired for a year I'm still not quite used to the downtime and how to fill it.

So here I am.

honestly i never heard the term stony tank before. 🤨. if someone could enlighten me. I ve got book from NACD and IANTD cave diving, PADI and SDI never read this ever.

I also i look at multiple website and youtube channel during this long winter cold and dark winter never came across this term. What's does it mean and wear does it originate from ? Any literature about this ?

Thank you so much !
