I've noticed that some subforums give me the option to edit my post while some don't.

My preference is for a ~15 min time window after posting to edit what I said (bad grammer, bad spelling, or just thought better of it). Then after ~15mins a post becomes permanent.

I found myself quoting people alot more than I otherwise would in the main forum because they would sometimes edit their foolishness after the fact. So my thoughts would lose context.

I think the membership that has been established here should now have a say who the members are. Maybe a committee of 10 or a vote. I already see at least one member here that probably does not belong.

... uh oh ... busted ... :shocked2:

:D

That should be fixed here now. HowardE did something with the permissions that I wasn't seeing. AFAIK, the settings are that you have 20 minutes to edit a post without seeing the "edited by" message at the bottom and 24 hours before the post becomes "permanent." If you're having an issue in other areas of the board besides this one, make a post in Site Support about it so the Admins are aware of it.

I am all for elite clubs and everything but we need to be careful how we approach this stuff. For example, when I started tech diving I used independent doubles, I used them quite successfully and developed some pretty good techniques for managing gas. Recently on another board, the owner was opposed to the use of indies and we debated about it with mostly anti-indie club having a go at me and another guy and when I had scored some pretty good points he decided this had been done to death and closed the thread.
I agree there is a need for a forum for open technical discussion not limited by any particular agency viewpoint.

It's also interesting that what goes around seems to come around. I also dove independent doubles for decades and only switched to a manifold to satisfy cave instructors. On the board, as wella s others Indie supporters beat up on a pretty regular basis by, as you describe, the anti-indie crowd. I would not have objected, except often the anti-arguments were usually based on agency doctrine and or an authoritarian argument rather than on any real experience or knowledge of te prs and cons of both approaches. And now ironically enough many of those same people are rabid backmounters who have adopted those same pro-indie arguments.

I think its important that the moderation in this forum focus on promoting open discussion, but discussion that is also intelligent and well informed and done in a manner where ideas are critiqued rather than degenerating into personal attacks.

In short, I don't think it should allow members to say "so and so is a dumbass", but rather the more subtle "so and so does things or is suggesting things that only a dumbass would appreciate" :D

Subtlety is not something this group is really known for. :)

We'll start out with this guideline and adjust as necessary. When it starts to cross from "spirited" to "pissing match" we'll step in accordingly. Has anyone invited Ainsle yet? :D

# Spirited discussions are encouraged, so feel free to speak your mind.
# Pissing matches are not, lets keep our disagreements civil and free of obscene language

What a NOVEL idea.

When I first joined rec.scuba many years ago that was what I expected. :rofl3: Then I realized it was un-moderated and quickly became a CF.

Then The Deco Stop came along, moderated somewhat, but even so; problems existed.

Lots of very experienced people never post on these forums because of personal attacks. I hope to see civil discussion here & will help ensure thats what we get. We may even attract some of the more experienced folks to post here if they feel it is a civillized place & not just another bunch of "Know It All, Been There Done That" boisterous, neanderthal whackos getting drunk at midnight & slinging crap, like we all too often see here and other boards.

What about having people in this forum at least fill in there profile? Otherwise you get a kid with "Adv Nitrox" giving advise in the Cave or Trimix forums.

Filling in a profile doesnt mean someone cant lie about it. I've approved people that I'm familiar with and have a feel for their postings. If I dont know anything about someone, I'm going to ask for more information before allowing them in.

I appreciate everyone's concern about the quality of posters back here, but I really believe we're over thinking this. If someone slips in and makes an ass of themselves or starts posting pink snorkel questions, I'll bounce them out. If ya'll have concerns over a user, PM me. If I get reports about the same person over and over, or if I can't verify their qualifications to be here, I'll bounce them out.

Instead of focusing on who shouldn't be here, I'd rather see ya'll encouraging people that should be here that I missed in the initial invites to join. We can deal with the 1% as it comes up.

how do I see a membership list?
