sorry that is easy to say when you have the funds. I don't.

I think you are really not taking into consideration potential costs of "bringing he tank on the road". You are rally locked into buying tanks locally. If you ship them it's a huge risk. The tank might have inspection current but that would be marginal and you will not know until the next inspection. And then again some might certify cylinders that should not have certified.

In my experience I once got a tank for what seemed to be a good deal and at that time I could not validate how good or bad it was. It had hydro and vis.

At the end it turned out it had only 1 year left on the hydro, the valve required good rebuild and it was not really that clean inside. So if I combined all the expenses that I would need to put to fix it it was more expensive than buying a new tank :) If you were ready to offer 250 for a used tank you are not far from the budget for a new.

Your hydro guy is a moron.
I've done more hydro's than most people I know. In the 90's I was doing about 50 per day, every day for nearly a decade. I have 3 or 4 sets of doubles that are from 1980'ish that have only been filled to 4k. They pass hydro every single time. I have one set that's from the 70's that never fails. These tanks are guaranteed for 10,000 cycles at 4000 psi.

I really wish the bad information on this board would go away. If you don't know what you are saying, don't say it.

Oh, and $275 is too much to spend on a used tank. Pay another 50'ish bucks and you can have a new tank. The last two sets of double LP104's with bolts, bands, manifolds only cost me $350.
Speaking of bad info..can you show me where any manufacturer guarantees a tank for 10k cycles at almost double rated working pressure?
