What I'm mildly curious about, not that it changes anything in the situation between me and him, is if the people that sold him the tanks had any idea that they were unusable in the US.
I doubt they would know. Why would they bother to understand local regulations when they had the tanks on their boat and filled them with their own compressor?

If they were to become famous those tanks might be worth a lot more someday :)

Did you buy them face to face? Do you know where he lives and more importantly does he know where you live?

Yes, face to face. I know where he lives, he may or may not know where I live, although it's more or less common knowledge these days.

Does it matter?

I have spoken to the police in his town about the accident, and he has too, according to him. I doubt that he will resort to something stupid, although he hasn't demonstrated the strongest analytical skills so far in this endeavor.

Education can be expensive, drill a hole in them and return them, even if he isn’t home. You may want to make sure they get left inside for security purposes and wear gloves ;)

I’m probably kidding

Some of the stuff he has on his linked in does not seem to add up. the service medal, times, coinsciding with his firefighter status as catastrophy reserve (similar to army reserve but a civilian concept). I looked into if Germany ever delpoyed such reserve to Afghanistan and ISAF which I couldn't find any evidence. Might still be true, but usually folks are in the military or in that reserve and not both and I have never heard of being in boith at the same time, but that's what it would have to be from what he posted on his profile. So who knows, he might just be a total different person he claims to be to begin with.
Did he edit his profile? I don't see any service history listed.

Would ruining his life over this make you much better than his acting?
I'd suggest don't do that and rather take the moral high ground than getting in the ditch.
Everybody has a different outlook on things. I think the moral high ground is informing innocent people that they are dealing with a fraud.
I don't see how letting a fraud get away with it is morally superior.

Yes, I can be a very petty person. Before my company was bought out, I was very good at collecting from people that didn't hold up their word. If your life is ruined by being outed in a lie, maybe you shouldn't have lied.
