protecting valuables (cash & passport) while diving

We're heading to Fiji in 2 weeks. I've read that you shouldn't leave cash or valuables in your room. And that you shouldn't leave them unprotected on the beach while snorkling/diving. And that the small islands have no ATMs and no one takes credit cards, so you need enough cash to last the whole trip.

So what's the reasonable solution to protecting a big wad of cash (and passport) while we're in the water? Secret James Bond compartments in the suitcase? Waterproof envelope in your wetsuit? Or are the warnings overblown and theft really isn't so likely?

BTW, we're diving with Jewel Bubble Divers on Taveuni and Tiliva in Kadavu. Will report back in June.

A small lock box that you can put in your suitcase, and a lock on your suitcase should do the trick. Take the keys (or hide them) with you, and enjoy worry free diving. You might also see if the resort has a safe for guests.

Get yourself one of those mini waterproof cases on a lanyard. Most dive shops have them and they're big enough to put your passport, key and a few bucks in. You also might want to consider leaving stuff in a safe in your room. They're usually available for a few bucks.

I leave my passport and valuables in my camera dry box and lock it up and leave it inside my suitcase, which will be locked too. Keys will be with me onboard the dive boat in a dry bag...

This is not a solution for locking up your passport, but if you need to secure items while you dive, like keys, pocket money, credit cards, cell phone, take a look at the KeyPod. We started carrying these a couple months ago and the response has been positive. I use one because the box is more secure than my old hiding spot and it's easier to access while I'm suited up.

The box is large, so you can store quite a bit in it. You don't have to carry a key to open it, since you get to set a custom 3-digit combination. The shackle can be locked around anything secure, car bumper, tow-eye, etc.

i would like to know hwere you are planning on going to first.

last fijian island i went too had about 40 people on it and still had credit card facilities.

in my almost 10yrs of Sth Pacific island hopping ive never had any concerns with passports/money as the islands we go to are pretty small and i have found the staff very very trustworthy. hell, the first vanuatu island i ever went to didnt even have locks on the doors so you didnt even have a key to your bungalow.

if i had concerns about money and passports - i would hide them very very well in our room i suppose. i wouldnt be taking all of it with me while snorkling and leaving it on the beach.

maybe your hotel has safe facilities you can ask about

The main concerned is Money....the best solution is put in mini water proof case bring down diving.

For the passport? does the hotel not have a room safe or a safe in the office?

For cash, I've never seen any island location that wouldn't take wet cash. Of course the 'mini case' that some offered would work great also.
