You need to weight the advice and see if it makes sense. There is usually someone on scubaboard that will jump in if it sounds bad and give you a different view. Free advice on anything about diving that could effect your health or pocketbook should be looked at very closely no matter where or who it came from. After a month of reading different posts you can figure out who seams to know what they are talking about and who is "blowing smoke".

I think the original poster tongue in cheek on his statement, and he seems as happy as I am about adding Logged Dives to the User stats last night. Did you notice that?

Yes I did notice that.

However, considering the sometimes rather UN-friendly nature of this board towards newbies in general, it's hard to separate those who are "tongue-in-cheek" with those who are really serious. It's kinda hard to believe someone is "just kidding" when you don't need to go far to find a newbie who's rudely being told to "Go do a search" or another who's being told his opinions don't count because of his lack of dive experience or threads that basically implies newbies are clogging up the board with all the "I just got certified!!" notices. With what's already been posted (particularly in Whine and Cheese) it's not hard to believe that someone truly wants the mods to limit one's total postings to one's total dives.

I'll be honest, had I found this board BEFORE I took OW I might have had second thoughts about getting certified myself. It would have given me the impression that divers act like this all the time to each other and like to treat newbies rather harshly. Fortunately I had already finished OW by the time I discovered this place, so I know divers really aren't like this in real life. But I do wonder how many potential new divers to the sport saw what went on here and thought, "No way am I going to be joining those jerks."

There have been threads that talk about these and other related issues, so I know I'm not the only one who's thinking this way.

NudiLover:
No. Please explain what you are talking about.

Thanks!
Tech Admin added number of dives logged right below the members location on every post or PM, if the member included this in his/her Dive Info. Like you's says 50-100 right below Calf. This happened on this thread Saturday night.

To me, this will be more helpful in trying to answer questions for a poster, as I'll have some idea of experience level before I think about offering suggestions.

It's not showing up to me....I use the classic theme, no sidebar, and it doesn't show up in anybody's posts...hmmm.

I can't speak for other members of this board but I for one tend to be less harsh when newbies post a question that might seem obvious to a more seasoned veteran. I actually believe I have helped more than a few newbies on this board as well as getting good advice from both newbie and seasoned diver alike.
It occured to me (and pointed out) after making the first post on this thread that many people post here to ask questions.
My rant was aimed at people who for instance tell me I shouldn't dive my doubles with my manifold closed even though I've done it this way for years and they have logged a couple of dives with a tech instructor who knows a guy who's met King George III.
My original post was not meant to offend anyone and I am sorry if it did. I for one support this new feature but I also support your right to not use it as well. I think there are certain benefits from knowing who you are talking to. I do more listening than talking on this board and read plenty of posts. I agree the "use the search" posts get tiresome but when a scubaboard veteran asks a question like 'what size pony bottle' I think that is an appropriate response. I would take the time to answer the question for a newbie or better yet point them to an earlier thread. I have rarely seen a scubaboard member intentionally jumping on a newbie for asking a 'dumb' question.
So the dive count is a double edged sword that can work in the favor of the newbie in most circumstances.

Yeah, seems to work with the portal theme only firefyter 201-500 ;)

wedivebc:
I suggested this once in someone elses rant but now it really hits home when you read a post from a guy with over 200 posts and is not even OW trained. Post count should not exceed dive count!
Sure everyone has an opinion but this forum is designed for people to share their EXPERIENCE with other divers. You need to dive to gain dive experience. You can't be learing to dive on scubaboard and then regurgitating information you read here as if you are an expert. I for one read a persons profile so I know if the information offered is offered from experience in-water or on-line.
My advice is step away from the keyboard and go dive, then tell us about it

So, I hope you at least dived one additional time for each time you post in this thread...You *are* following your own advice, right?

Well - his Dive Info reflects over 500 dives, and his Stats reflect less than 500, so it appears so.

You could update your Dive Info thru the Quick Links pull down menu, above.

Actually I have been using my posts sparingly but since I am going out in about an hour from now, you get this one ;)
