I'm a big responsibility, are you sure? I have to be fed and watered and walked three times a day.... and I just wouldn't survive very long in Cinci, I've already tried that once. Too far from warm saltwater.

I guess you can talk like that in confidence because you know yourself, but I don't know you - ergo, it sounds like talk like a bluffing OW with 7 dives. I have a pretty good start on my diving for a desert dweller with 3-1/2 years into his first card, but I'm always eager to learn, with SB being an excellent location for the quest. If you listed validating credentials, I could feel more confortable learning from you. If you decline, I'll have to be suspect of anything you may offer in time. And you may well be a superior diver who can prove herself in every post, but you'll have to do it over and over with your approach.



Having no idea where your "neck of the woods" might be, even that doesn't work well for me. I am quite familiar with "baggards talk a lot; accomplishers don't have time," but I want to recognize the accomplsihed and learn more from them/y'all.

Hope you decide to exit the closet soon. :geek: We already have plenty of unfounded opinions.

It really matters to you that much what my rating is and # of dives? Curious. And no, you do not offend me. I entered this board for a specific purpose, wanting some feedback from instructors regarding a specific incident. Cruising around, I found this board to be different from the tiring environment of #of dives..

I really couldn't care less if you think I'm an OW diver, as the reason I find this board interesting is that it allows me to remain connected to a sport and profession I loved. The part of the profession that I will never miss, is the attitude that gets passed on from some arrogant instructors, to their students. A truly experienced diver doesn't beak off about their credentials - as it's just a hobby, and it sounds ridiculous.

Assume for a moment that I've proved to you my certification and experience enough that you will consider my opinion - My advice would be that you don't need the numbers or cert cards - you can tell exactly how experienced a diver is by simply listening to them talk. You are right, I am confident, and I haven't found that the lack of any posted credentials created suspicion with the experience bracket I find delightful - new divers who just want to dive, are positive, and are here to have fun.

I have to say that it isn't the profile (IMHO) that gives credibility, because folks can abuse that notion by putting down whatever is needed to get some....heh

It is the comments, thoughts, and suggestions that come out of their fingers to the keyboard, in my opinion....And, bottom line, each suggestion/comment/thought needs to be evaluated to determine if it makes sense, by the potential user of that info, for their given scenario...This is the internet after all, and each piece of info is initially suspect...

But, if the profile is the deciding factor for you, and if my profile doesn't cut it for you, please feel free to ignore what of mine that you read.

I suggested this once in someone elses rant but now it really hits home when you read a post from a guy with over 200 posts and is not even OW trained. Post count should not exceed dive count!
Sure everyone has an opinion but this forum is designed for people to share their EXPERIENCE with other divers. You need to dive to gain dive experience. You can't be learing to dive on scubaboard and then regurgitating information you read here as if you are an expert. I for one read a persons profile so I know if the information offered is offered from experience in-water or on-line.
My advice is step away from the keyboard and go dive, then tell us about it

Whatever the intention of starting this thread (and it doesn't sound particularly tongue-in-cheek), I am getting a definite sentiment from several who have responded to this thread: If we don't have sufficient experience (how much is sufficient? 200 dives? 500? 1000?), we're welcome to lurk and maybe ask an occasional intelligent question (although how will we be able to do even that?), but don't be pretentious and let that post count mount up.

Diving is my passion, but it's a good year for me if I can dive 20 times. I'm probably a decade away from being able to flaunt even 200 dives. So how many posts dare I accumulate before I start offending people?

Just curious. In the meantime, guess I'll leave the newbie greets to Dandie Don, for fear of racking up my post count!

You sound wise beyond your "number of dives", Nudigirl - the first thing to learn in diving is to run in the opposite direction when you detect the vile stench of ego...but its easy to detect using a simple rule of thumb: The louder they roar, the more they have to puff out the fur in order to look big...

We need to get you diving more, though. Where are you, exactly? I did 12 dives on a 2-1/2 day liveaboard out of Long Beach last May; would have been more if I was a younger feller. A little nippy for an admitted WWW, but hey - a good 7 mil suit, neop beanie, gloves, botties - warm water down your back before you get in, hot chocolate to drink. Saw 5 different kinds of starfish on the same pinnacle, and the nudis!

Hummmm......ok I'll post here Was gonna stay out but I'll put my 2 cents in. Oh but wait...it'll add another post ....argggghhhhhhhhh.....ahhhhh screw it.
Being as I work with computers all day long I'm around the net quite a bit so maybe I have an excuse to post more than my dives? I've got around 400 posts and coming up on 50 dives. All I can say is I feel I've accellerated my learning curve substancially by using this board. Without meeting guys like FredT I would have never gone the BP/W route and learned as much as I have about diving "truly neutral" as soon as I did. His support of his products and the help I got from him on SB was amazing. I got help when I squeezed my ears in OW dives. I built my own custom Suunto Vyper download cable from a guy on SB and saved $100.00. I've learned how to use my Olympus C5050 in th Oly forum. I can go on and on. I'll admit to getting a little "cocky" at times and getting into some heated debates on Pony bottles and BP/W's. Maybe someone would have reason to say "what does this guy know....he has 20 dives" In any event, it's JUST THE INTERNET, take it with a grain of salt. All I can say is SB is a fantastic place to learn. So many divers, with diverse backgrounds. Cavers, wreck divers, engineers, computer techs, commercial divers, quarry divers. You name it. You just can't get this level of info from your LDS. Sure you can get some training. But taking what I learn here and elsewhere, then APPLYING IT by diving as much as possible has been working great for me.
