Hands up!

Who dives in wet suits in the NorCal area (e.g. Monterey, Big Sur, Point Lobos, etc.)?

Who dives dry?

Time and depth of your typical dive too!

Thanks! :D

Dry suit. Typical dive is 40-50 minutes at 60-100 max.

I did about 300 dives in Monterey in a wetsuit. I blew out
the neck seal on my drysuit Sunday. I have a Pt. Lobos
reservation Saturday, am I thinking about using the
wetsuit? NO. (And the reservation has already gone to
a good home).

The other question you should ask is "how many times a
year do you dive cold water?" (120-150 in my case).
You'll find that people will put up with a wetsuit for a few
dives a year, but if you dive all the time, you get a drysuit.

dive a henderson 7mm hyperstretch, with a 5/7mm hood underneath, about 50 dives a year in Monterey, 2* 1+ hour dives a day...

7mm semi-dry w/ 5mm core warmer. Roughly 50 minute BT. Not "toasty", but warm.

Freedive in the same area with just the semi-dry, in the water for roughly 90 minutes at a stretch.

All the best, James

We've been diving monterey since since december and have done 54 dives there, 60 after this sunday. We both use henderson 7/5 hyperstretch and have the 3/5 hooded vest on top for added warmth. The mrs. uses a core warmer in addition. Dives average 45 minutes from 30-120 feet on any given dive. We ususally try and do 3 dives a day and have been fine doing so; in fact, we love these wetsuits as they are very easy getting in and out of and plenty of flexibility. My computer has had temps range from 45 to 55 between suface and depth over the course of the dives and we've never been unbearably cold.

Drysuit, Viking in my case. I've done about 30 dives here in Monterey since early June. Ranging from 30" at 70' to around 50" at 30'. I've never had the shivers once in all those dives, regardless of how cold it was underwater and topside. The wetsuit divers I was with were chattering teeth quite a bit on those same dives.

127 dives logged in the Monterey Carmel area.
Depths between 45 and 120.
Bottom time 30 - 60 minutes.
Xcel 976 hooded semi dry.
Normally at least 3 dives per day.
My Xcel keeps me very comfy to the low 40's on fun dives.
On skill dives where we are not moving much I can feel the difference.
Because I want to start diving doubles and want more comfort on SI's I will be going dry.
After I got away from poorly fit rental gear being cold in the water stopped.
Your milage may vary.
