I guess we all know that illicit pills can look like the oxycontin. norco, xanex: as mass producedand are widely available and kill thousands in the US every month among the young who buy street drugs. I guess that it is easier to expect in the US but these fentenal laced killers are showing up in small drugstores…in Cozumel! and will kill.

Last week one of our guests at the Villa Aldora experienced a serious migraine headache, and searched several downtown, street front stores where she was able to buy some illegal but properly marked Percocet. When back to the Villa, took one and within one hour she stopped breathing and no heartbeat was detected. Fortunately a paramedic from an adjoining room promptly began CPR until the ambulance arrived, saved her life and she then got three days in the hospital.

Keep in mind that Percocet and all opioids, and the like are COMPLETELY ILLEGAL in Mexico and if any of that crap is offered to you—bet there is a good chance it will KILL YOU. FOR GODS SAKE BE CAREFUL.

So thankful that this woman survived. Please..if you have a medical concern, seek professional and realiable medical assistance at one of the local medical facilities. In addition, it is important to be aware that Formulary and Manufacturing guidelines can differ from USA standards. Before purchasing any Meds in another country, please do consult with your Medical Care Provider at home.

Great post, Dave. I bring antibiotics home with me on trips, but even self-treating with those is questionable. Self-treating with Percocet is similar to Russian Roulette even if safely sourced which this wasn't even that. And thanks, Sue.

oh yeah. def stay away from mexican pain-killers other than ibuprofeno. I pissed blood for two days when I bought from one of those tourist places close to the water.

I only go to YZA now for ibuprofeno and prednisona.

Our first trip to Coz was in 1994.... and I remember some of the girls coming back to the villa with a load of Percocet and Valium purchased right over the counter at Pharmacia Azul up in the north end. I remember them whooping it up as they took off on their rented mopeds with no helmets, bikini's and flip flops.... While all of this was happening, a buddy and I did a dive on a small ponga with a bartender that I had met the night before at the Coral Princess and we spent the evening trading tequila shots and talking diving. Next morning he took me out to his "special spot" and we we bagged a dozen nice lobsters to take home for dinner... Man...the times have sure changed...and it's amazing that we survived our reckless youth.

Was this an actual pharmacy or one of those places that advertises VIAGRA in foot-high letters? Because I would be careful of the latter but the former seem extremely reliable.

An actual pharmacy... albeit with a 15 year old non english speaking girl running the register. One of the "moped" girls that I mentioned did speak fluid spanish.

But that was almost 30 years ago. Today I don't even trust the US drug companies let alone the Mexican ones... But it's not that big of a deal to me since I gave up most recreational drugs almost 20 years ago...

Now I just stick to totally legal weed here in WA......which by the way is far less dangerous and harmful than alcohol. IMHO...
