In 11 years of diving in New England, this is, hands-down, the absolute coolest experience I have ever heard of in our waters. Fair play, my friend. Savor that experience for the rest of your life.

That is soooo cool! Wow! A once in a lifetime experience! The dive "report" was a pleasant read.
Thanks for sharing... I think I know where you'll be scalloping next time! (with an underwater camera!)

Agreed on all counts! (Especially the underwater camera part)

I think the experience sounds amazing. My only concern is that based on the size and coloration of the beluga, it would appear that this is a very young whale who likely has lost it's family pod. He/she was likely staying close to you hoping you would help it.

I really don't know your location in terms of marine mammal resources but I would suggest you report your dive experience to the appropriate authorities and perhaps they can help redirect this little guy towards home.

I seem to recall from the Beluga's at the Vancouver Aquarium that the young calves stay with their mothers until they are at least two...very fuzzy memory.

Cool photos.

once I got home, I think the females only get to be 10-12' and it was definitely in that range. also, it's back looks grayish in the pic's but everywhere else it was white. As for contacting folks, I have tried emailing all weekend with no luck. I'm going to make calls today hopefully.

I'm no great writer but my friends did do a super job with the pic's considering the subjects :)

Thats a fantastic experience! I'm glad you were so lucky to meet her.
I had an interesting encounter last summer. I was anchored in Boston Harbor area and a whale shark approached my boat and circled the area around the boat for about an hour.
A whale shark has baleen, not teeth. It was VERY big, probably 20 feet or more long and whould come within a foot or 2 of the boat when it passed by.
At the time I wasn't a certified diver, and I'm not sure if I would have jumped in the water to swim with him if I had been either....what would you do? :11:
