I have a mk10 with 2 g250's that I purcahsed in the 90's. Every year I have to send the set in for adjustment since the "octo" g250 develops a slight free flow. Every year I have tried to adjust the orifice to no avail and end up sending it in for the annual. I have decided to get another regulator for the octo. Can anyone suggest an appropriate octo that would match the mk10 g250 setup. Thanks!

You just need someone to really fix the problem G250. If you replace the orifice, spring, and balance chamber, that will do it. You might not need all those parts, especially the balance chamber, but they're all fairly cheap, so there you are. My guesses (and they are guesses) are that you have a nicked orifice or a worn spring. The worn spring can cause problems because it won't be consistent with the pressure; I've seen it happen and it makes them hard to tune.

You should also consider storing the G250s with the purge just slightly depressed (like I feel on Monday mornings) to take any extra pressure off the seat.

If you are totally sold on getting a different 2nd stage for an octo, but you want something appropriate for your current set up, a G200 (or G200B) might be nice, or even a metal case 109.

I still use today as my main regs my Mk10 & G200 that I bought new in '89....Have had several octos on it over the years but most recently, about 2 years ago, put a (used--bought for $50) Oceanic alph 8 octo---------absolutely no problems @ all with it....

There is absolutely no reason why one G250 should work well and the other should be a problem. There is no difference between a G250 and a G250 octo. that should be a great rig.

Yep, start with the orifice: People often ovelook this part, and it's the only source of troubles I've had so far with the 5 G250's of my family.

My personal one is 10 years overdue for service and still works like a charm. I'll put another 20-30 dives in it over Xmas and then we'll see if I'll do something.

OK.....the Usual Suspects have pretty well nailed it down; and I concur that the most likely item is the orifice. I won't cover the same ground, so let's look at a couple of other issues.

Sometime after service, the octo develops a slight free flow, then you adjust the orifice. When adjusting the orifice it's important that every time you do so, you should take pressure off the soft seat by depressing the purge button. Not doing so will engrave the rubber.

The free flow itself: Are the bubbles tiny, pea sized and coming out consistent in size and rate? If so, the poppet stem o-ring(s)might be the culprit.

But the thing that concerns me is the recurrence of the problem even after a service. You don't need a new octo-you need a new service technician. Contact DA Aquamaster or better yet, join us in the Do It Yourself section and stop wasting your diving budget on what Vance Harlow http://www.airspeedpress.com/newregbook.html calls "underhauls."

Yes the air leak was pea sized and constant rate both before and after the initial serve. I did try to adjust the orifice without any luck. Oh yea I didn't depress the purge lever when I did it, didn't know that I was supposed to. The company picked up the return shipping and the tech said he would detune the octo was was set at .6. I want to work on my own regs from now on so other than the book what specialty tools would I order for the g250 and mk10. I have all basic tools, but no scuba specific tools. Also does anyone make a g250 video.

I don't see anything wrong with setting a G250 (or other adjustable) octo at .6. You just crank the knob in and you will be changing that up into the 2.0 range. Open it up again if you need to use it (or for storage). I doubt that the problem you are experiencing is a simple adjustment. But it may be as simple as a balance chamber or orifice o-ring that was not changed.
