In 1976 while station in the Coast Guard, I was certificated in Hawaii as an open water NAUI diver. Recently, my wallet was stolen and I submitted information to NAUI HQ for replacement certification card. NAUI HQ stated that they had no record of me being certificated. I contacted a local 5 Star PADI dive shop I have been dealing with in Florida since early 1990s and in their customer records my NAUI date of completion and certification number is on file along with 35 air fills I have on account. NAUI HQ called this store to confirm same but then stated they needed the instructor's number, which was not recorded. Thru perserverence, I found the now retired instructor but NAUI had no record of this individual being a NAUI instructor, even though this person was on the NAUI Board of Directors for many years and is in the NAUI Hall of Fame. NAUI also stated that when they moved HQ from California to Florida years ago, that many diver's records were purged, discarded, lost. They now have contacted the retired instructor who remembers teach this course but they still refuse to issue me a replacement even though I have provided date of certification, cert number and empirical evidence that I, in fact, am a certificated NAUI diver. I also had applied for a replacement card in late 1980s before the NAUI move to Florida and received same at that time, no problem. If you were certificated between NAUI's inception and it's move to Florida, it is wise that you contact them to insure that your records are on file. It is my hope that NAUI rectifies my situation and corrects what is a huge quality control and probable PR problem. I have now submitted this information to the current NAUI BOD and will advise the outcome of this dilema.

Hate to be picky, but that huge text makes my eyes hurt. Can you change it to something smaller please?

Same here ... in the interest of saving everyone else's eyesight, I changed it to a smaller font size and left the bolding for emphasis ... ;)

Take a con-ed course with PADI at that same 5 star PADI shop that knows who you are, then your troubles will be minimized. I know it's not the best answer to your problem, but it does take care of that pesky little issue of having a valid c-card when traveling.

Agreed.

This is not Just a Naui problem all of the Certification cards before computers, where of course just on paper for reasons there where not computers to keep the records on...
So hence the problem for OLD C-Cards holders...
Since the shop you have been going to Knows you take a Advanced course get NEW Card and you will have Fun and No problems..
Aloha Mark..

Hey there! It was nice talking to you yesterday ;) I really hoped that the shop you work with could help you there....No matter what, I hope it gets cleared up soon and you can log some serious bottom time -with a cert card :D...

I was just thinking....if you make loud enough noise, they just might come around :)

Don't know if this helps at all, but at that time you got a "diploma" from NAUI as well as the card. Turns out mine is in my "important papers" drawer - along with various other odd pieces of paper. Was looking through it the other day. If you keep such a drawer it might be there and completely forgotten about. I know I was surprised to see it.

This won't help you this time but I suggest when you do get a new card to take several photcopies of it front and back. Basically follow the same protocols advised by experts for traveling and your passport and birth certificates.
