But then I got into the water and discovered that now my fins were way loose and the straps way too long. Now I have a really expensive set of spring straps taht are too long and 'pseudo-permanently' attached to my fins...I can take them off but I don't think that I will be able to exchange them after doing so.

Fear not. They are easily shortned. Here is a link to a D-I-Y article I did on making them yourself. You can see how to make them shorter. Then, lose the lame attachment hardware and replce it with 1/8" SS rod or SS wire.

UP, did you make those yourself??

Excellent site you have there Dave. I've had it book-marked for some time now. Great reference. I just haven't had the time to make my own yet.

...inspired by a fella named Dalton. First pair I made was a couple of years ago... but instead of using hocky pucks (what is a hocky puck? :D) I used HMWP.

Nice job! I had a heck of a time finding hocky pucks mid-summer for the original project. My wet suit fins (rarely used as I dive dry)still have the original hocky puck version on them - I'm going to get around to changing them real soon now  !

Glad you like it. Like I said, you can shorten yours easily, the time consuming part (the blocks) are already done.

Mike,
A Dremel type rotary tool with a grinding stone or cut off wheel will take care of the mashed pins in seconds, if you can borrow one from someone. Also try dumping some liquid soap down the fin blocks before you take the old brackets off. I used vise grips and they came out easily. Good luck
