Since when do MODs delete our messsages for "not being helpful" ???

Some guy posted a message claiming to be a diver with 20+ dives, but goes on and asks "How deep can I dive without doing a deco stop?"

I posted a half tongue in cheek reply questioning his certification. I admit I might have been mocking the poster a little, but I was quite shocked at the apparent lack of basic NDL knowledge!

A Moderator by the name of "TC" sends me a private message saying my reply was not very helpful and has been deleted!

Huh???

Isn't this a little overboard? Seems like a MOD being a little over zealous in his deleting a post. I've certainly seen abusive and much less helpful messages left alone. Challenged, repudiated, argued, put down, yes, but deleted?

Seems like petty censorship to me.

Id really like a comment from other mods on this. The message itself isn't worth defending, but I am wondering if I can get a "third opinion" on this.

Did you post in one of the "green" flame free forums?

Basic Scuba discussions and new divers and those considering diving are flame free and kinder /gentler sub forums.

But I agree. I did not see the post, but sounds trollish.

Here is your answer:

I admit I was openly mocking the poster.

You admit to mocking and making fun of another poster who is a new diver and you're surprised it was deleted?

And then you follow it up by posting this?

Some [edited] posted a message

Ok, I'll clear it up for you. From the ToS:

This is a friendly forum based on mutual respect. While the Moderators will do their best to keep it that way, it's impossible for us to review every post. If any post seems to violate the spirit of this concept, please use the Report Bad Post button Report Bad Post at the bottom of the post to notify us.

Your response was reported, reviewed and it was decided that it violated that premise. We can't review every single post, so if you see things that you feel are more abusive, report them and they will be reviewed. Just because we miss something from time to time doesn't mean that it's okay for everyone else to be abusive.

Perhaps, I was not informed that I was violating the TOS or that my post was reported.

Just deleted for being "not helpful"

PS: I've cleaned up the original post above, I get your point!

My apologies that you weren't fully informed. "Not helpful" was most likely used in an attempt to "nicely" "guide" you.

PS: I've cleaned up the original post above, I get your point!

Thank you! :)

I've seen gripes on SB before of people unhappy with their posts being deleted and I honestly don't understand the big fuss. Is it a personal affront or unbearable humiliation if your post is deleted or what is it that upset people so badly with one of their posts being deleted?

To the mods, heaven help you if you delete this post. It took me all of 11 and a half seconds to type it out. That's 11 and a half seconds I won't get back if you delete this post.

In a lot of cases it's just a matter of people becoming invested in a thread and taking a personal interest in it. They may have been following the thread for a while and their viewpoint on their response is different than others who may be seeing it more objectively for the first time. A lot of times, once someone has had a chance to reflect on it they'll understand why it was deleted better than they do at the moment it happens.

In some cases they're right to protest. Mods are human, we make mistakes too. Providing a platform for people to question decisions helps keep us honest. :)

I remember I had a post of mine deleted once......it straightened me up and I fly straight now. Nothing but clean and halpful :D.
