I will be spending 2 weeks at the Royal Brayka from 14th to 28th November. Closer to the time I will need to book a Refresher course and a dive package. The obvious choice is the on-site Extra Divers shop at the sister Brayka hotel (I think). HOWEVER, I try to be diligent and came across a very negative comment on TripAdvisor, granted dated December 2010. I have been around the block and know that individual negatives do not mean the shop is trash; on the contrary. However it is a flag, hence this querying post. The next TA comment (2009) was positive.

Has anyone dived with Extra Divers more recently. I realise that they are German, but my jingoist tendencies are minor. What were the experiences and evaluation?

I did a few dives with Extra Divers in Port Ghalib and found them excellent (Jan 2012). I appreciate it's a different location but I'd be surprised if it were that different.

Hi,

Have been diving with them in Makadi Bay, it's run by Germans their attitude is regimental. The Egyptian guides and helpers are all polite and amicable, last year in May found the German ex-pat staff to be sourly and downright insulting, I will not dive with them again.

Giving recommendations ain't always easy, because it stronly depends on what you're expecting. We've been there at the end of september now for the 2nd time and again it was absolutely ok for us. The center is a bit long in the tooth, but they try to keep it well and organized. If you're looking for a "full service" diving center (meaning getting pampered), then you'll be probably disappointed. If you're looking for a place, where you can just grab your stuff and (quite) dive whenever you want independently, then going there won't be a mistake - IMHO.

Dives offered:
house reef (north and southside, shore & zodiak one way) - 08:00 am - 04:00 / 05:00 pm
zodiak dives - 4 times a day
minibus tours - halfday and fullday
daily boot (no recommendation here, the boat seems to be kept together merely by rust and paint ;-) )
speedboat to Elphinstone (nice, but only if you've not a tendency of getting seasick)

When you check in, you will be asked for your diving certification, medical certificate, a copy of your passport and if you have a diving insurence. They'll keep this stuff until check out. You'll get a box and will have your personal cabinet (padlock), dryroom is not locked. If you dive Nitrox, you'll be responsible to prepare your tank for the dive (meaning: you have to analyze your nitrox, to label your tank and to write it on the list), regular air tanks are always ready at the beach or will be prepared for you if you're going e.g. by minibus.

Because visability wasn't that great this time (and we were a little spoiled by St. John's the week before our stay at Brayka Bay), I decided to finally make my stress & rescue course, which was really terrific. I had two Instructors (Ahmed & Murad) just for myself (business is kinda slow since the revolution) and I learned a lot - this course I'd rate high end qualitiy: challenging, individual, and now I know, that I can a lot more than I thought I could and I also know what I have to train more often (and it was fun :-) )

I realise that they are German, but my jingoist tendencies are minor. What were the experiences and evaluation?

Yep, Extra Divers are German, but the diving center is quite international (customers were from all over Europe); the stuff at least speaks English and IIRC Italien, Dutch, ... (well, and some of course even speak German ;-) ) I'd go there anytime again, IMO the stuff is professional and friendly, but they are not animators ;-)

Great you are going now, I just got back from El Quseir Oct. 31 to Nov. 6 sea was calm hardly any wind, water temp. 28 - 29C at 20 - 25 meter , diving with a 5mm semi-dry phew should have brought the shorty, day temp. 29 - 31C, night 22 - 23C.

I have just returned from two weeks at Royal Brayka (Marsa Alam), diving with Extra Divers at the adjacent Brayka Bay resort. ‘Line’ got it spot on in his post above. In summary I rate Extra Divers as a good outfit which anyone should feel happy to use. The length or brevity of the Pro/Con comments below are not a yardstick of quality (I am being picky regarding the ‘Cons’):

PROS: Well organised; punctual; excellent range of services; excellent focus on safety and sound procedures; good breadth of environments covered by the chosen weekly itinerary; good value compared to the main competition; best house reef of any resort in my modest experience with truly world-class snorkelling; flexible shore diving; close to two of the best resorts in the Marsa Alam area; good hygiene; friendly and respectful staff (including management/admin); well frequented by a range of nationalities (except perhaps underrepresented by Russians); no complaints heard about rental gear quality; accommodating with extra boats on popular dives

CONS: Dive staff not nearly as knowledgeable about marine life as in the Caribbean – function mainly as navigators; little attention to small critters; persistent problems with one outboard on a zodiac (=poor maintenance procedures?); shore facilities a bit tatty, especially paving and lockers; DMs over-insistent on group ascents dictated by the fastest air-gulper (can be overcome by prior agreement – requires client action); no reference library; shop unimaginatively stocked. Over-selling of certain dive site attractions (e.g. Abu Dabab sea grass shallows can be snorkelled with almost no loss of experience quality rather than diving at 3.5 metres) = ask around, especially of divers on their 2nd week.

Would I dive with Extra Divers (Brayka Bay) again? Absolutely.
Did I find the German management overbearing or rude? Not at all – on the contrary.
Did my experience provide value-for-money? Definitely

Cheers, Pedro

Hi Pedro,
Thanks for your review.
i am trying hard to decide between Extra Divers or Emperor.
How did you book your trip? did you pre -buy any dives or did you buy a dive package when you arrive?
how did you book your hotel - together with diving or separately?
we have a family so im looking hard at how to get the best deal.
May i ask did you see any kids snorkeling on the house reef? i have two young ones (5,4yr old)- whom we are trying to educate snorkeling.
Also, have you heard anyone taking trips to Safaga or Hamata wreck?
Did you happen to know are the Extra Divers competitive in their pricing? (i am particularly comparing with Emperor)
Tx!
