The cartel violence from mainland has made it here. The new generation cartel in particular has control over most of this area. They don't play nice if you are involved in the drug industry.

For a tourist the rule is simple: don't get involved in the drug trade on Cozumel. It's not a guarantee that you'll be safe but it will cut the probability way back.

Yeah, Having visited and dived Coz for the past 20 years everything changes for the better or worse and Coz in changing for the worse. I started to feel the drug vibe and the pushers in the past 5 years starting to gradually increase... Offering blow, pot, pills and whatever else. If you're into that maybe it seems great but if you're not it is an annoyance.

Note: If you are into that and get pinched in Coz for buying drugs by the police you have put yourself into a hell the likes of which you never imagined. You're a "wealthy" American tourist trapped in the Mexican justice system at that point. I think the Coz tourist police can only hold you for 48 hours before you get shipped to the mainland and parked in a mainland prison (where you certainly don't want to be).

Do as ya will, take the risks but understand the consequences.

A couple of cold SOL beers is all I need at the end of the day.

It has always been there, might just be more aware of it. I think it has become more innocent in the past decade. Guess it is all perspective.

Every Méxican adult citizen is hypothetically entitled to own firearms. Transporting them or possessing them outside ones home is highly regulated and limited, and military-style weapons are, for the most part, prohibited.
 
Can someone post a current pix of the beach at the Grand Occidental? Wondering how much erosion has taken place since last year, if any.
