UPDATE: Authorities said the incident appears to be an accidental drowning. This is currently an active investigation.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is in search of a missing diver on the Choctawhatchee River near Cowford Landing.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Walton County Fire Rescue, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife are on scene assisting.

Authorities said teams are working alongside partner agencies in a coordinated effort to locate the individual.

Authorities are asking the public to please avoid the area at this time.

News 13 will provide further updates as they become available.
 
That's my old stomping grounds from the 70's. The Choctaw River is what we locals called a Swamp River, meaning it's swamp that just happens to be moving with a current. There is nothing in that river that I know of that would be worth diving except maybe fossils or sharks teeth if one is so inclined.

Edited to add: He may have been looking for something lost like an outboard or something like that.
