Well, not exactly.

Well, not now but it was originally about people until they realized passenger rail isn't profitable.

"Last month, President Claudia Sheinbaum launched construction of the freight infrastructure for the Maya Train which will allow this rail system to transport passengers and goods with the goal of strengthening the development of southeastern Mexico."

"Brigadier General Alejandro Gómez Vargas, head of the Maya Train’s Coordination, Delivery and Reception Center, said that the cargo service will begin in 2026".

This statement also illustrates that the projects are separate.

"We’re interested in boosting the cargo coming through the Trans-Isthmian corridor, and if we can join forces with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway, we’ll surely generate business for the rest of the companies,” he said.

I'll let you in on a secret. The Tren Maya will lose lots of money on freight too.

I believe it. And I'll let you in on a secret. The powers pushing this project don't care.

I have a bad opinion of this but:

They've already tore the heck outa almost the whole property and now they are building a road next to an existing road.

This screams of give me more money.

Look around at all the half complete projects on the island.... Sad and will never change

Missed this one from late June (and while I was on the island).
Immediately after this unfortunate incident the current harbor master became very cautious and did a few afternoon and southern closures. This article from almost three weeks back mentions a restriction of passengers under 10 years old. Does anyone have more details and if it still in effect?

"According to reports, there were no lifejackets for the passengers." I've been on boats without life vests but then I wear my own snorkel vest anyway.

As is normal on Sundays, watch the local boats heading to Cielo some time. Mostly pirates taking friends and family, over loaded and ignored
