Don't underestimate starfish...... I saw one of those suckers chase down a mussel before it even had a chance to run. :11:

LOL. I once saw some cockles take off and run when they caught scent of a Pacific Coast Pycnopodia!

The world is a frighteningly small place. Somewhere along the line the Lionfish photo I posted here was forwarded by someone named Pete from CT to my friend Andy at NOAA because he thought the NOAA Fisheries folks should be made aware. To make a long story short, this resulted in my own photograph being forwarded to me. :D

Yeah but a real photographer would've had a picture of the finger.

What can I say, my priorities must be a little off.... I went for the first aid kit instead of the camera.

Yeah, I was well taken care of!;)

Even the doctor said kudos to Chris and Thatssomebadhat for having the first aid kit and a fine job wrapping up my finger in a buddy splint.

A pic was the last thing on my mind at the time.

That was me. Andy and I go back a few years to when he had the RUDY working on wreck documentation in Long Island, Fishers, and Block Island Sounds.

I'v been watching for Lionfish for a while, especialy since seeing 6 adults on one wreck off of NC.

Right now I'm talking with NOAA about a public Advisory for the EMS and shoreline hospitals about the critters moving in. Sooner or later some diver, snorkler, or fisherman is going to get stung and not know what hit them. We think we will do it through Seagrant.

I really hope that Lionfish do not become year round up here. Finding one the hard way in low vis in the Sound would not be nice at all.

Cool, I figured it was someone on here. Andy is a great guy, we were all sad when he left the NOAA lab here in RI and went to Alaska.

Another person at NOAA I know pretty well, Jon Hare, was just the coauthor on a paper on the thermal tolerance of Lionfish. The winter temperatures here in southern New England are well below the chronic lethal minimum temperature they found of 10 degrees C (50 F), which means the Lionfish shouldn't be able to over-winter here.
