Rene mentioned at a seminar once that MK designation was derived from the dive helmet.

Mark or MK followed by a number is used to designate a design number and is in common use in the US military. E.g. MK I would be the first design in a series, followed by MK II etc. The MK V diving helmet was the fifth in that design series.

It probably comes from the use of Mark in some measuring systems. Samuel Clemens worked on river boats and liked the sound of "mark twain" (second mark on the measuring device) from the person measuring the depth of the river.

Not many people know Samuel had a brother named Tutu Clemens who was a steam locomotive engineer. You've probably heard of him by his professional name, "Too Too Twain."

Ugh. To further the series, minor modifications to an existing design would be mod1, mod2, etc. So the mark 5 (MK-V) diving helmet that got a black plastic handle on the purge valve instead of a brass handle as originally supplied would be a Mk-V Mod 1 hat.

And that would be noted in the record of revisions and on the material history for that particular hat.
