where do you purchase your insurance through? Is DM insurance different from instructor insurance, can you convert one policy to another? are there different classes of insurance? one better than another? :D

Our LDS provides DM insurance for $180 Can. ($170 U.S.approx.)

I get my DM insurance through Witherspoon. It's $305 per year for 2009-2010.

Witherspoon & Associates Scuba Insurance

DM insurance is different from Instructor insurance in so far as it's cheaper. It does provide the same coverage, but the level of risk varies between an instructor and a DM. I carry my own insurance. My shop doesn't offer an umbrella policy, but I doubt I'd use it if they did. I don't like the idea of being thrown into a large pool sharing one coverage limit. I'd rather know what my specific coverage is and that it applies to just me.

If you can get DAN insurace - get DAN insurance - they are brilliant. Previosuly, liability insurance was only available to DAN Europe members but I think they were hoping to extend it.

If you are working through an agency, I would recommend using the insurance they recommend, as it were.

Cheers

C.

Crowley & Divin' Hoosier both have good recommendations. Personally, we have been using Witherspoon for the past several years as Vincenzia & Buckley is usually too expensive. Furthermore, I'm a little leery of the relationship they have with PADI. A little TOO close <wink-wink-nod-nod-saynomore, saynomore> :crafty:

It would be interesting to see if DAN Instructor liability insurance is available here in the US. Anyone who enquires.... care to post the pricing? We're EACH paying $515.70 with Witherspoon right now.

I looked once into diving insurance for US and I was shocked how expensive it was.
In any case insurance for DM and instructor should be priced different and besides this will cover you when you help an instructor but your operation should still have liability insurance to cover the non teaching aspects of the DM role like guiding and operating boats.
I do not know if you need to be insured to have active status in US but I would not think so.
Instructors surely do but it is worth checking if you are not going to be involved in teaching if you need to bother at all
