More than one open water student has emerged from their first dive, tired and unused to all the gear on their back. As they exit the surf zone, they attempt to remove their fancy fins with levered closures or squeeze to open buckles only to find that gravel or sand has jammed the mechanism. As they puzzle through this problem, a wave knocks them over and the problem gets bigger. The dive master runs to assist and yanks the strap down without regard to the fancy closure, sometimes breaking the strap. But that diver needs to get stood up and out of the surf zone.

Spring straps and bungee straps are a safety improvement in my opinion. Fancy levered strap closures are reliable in a swimming pool, but I can't recommend using them on a beach.
