Mares Abyss is an excellent reg. I don't know anyone who owns one that would trade it for another. There are some Mares' haters on this board because when Mares bought Dacor they did not continue to support the older Dacor regs - but Mares has always supported their own older regs.

Mares makes excellent gear and when I'm not diving my PRAM Double Hose, I dive Mares. My wife dives a MR42 and says it is the best breather she has ever used (I can't confirm that, since she says the only way I can use it is if I pry it out of her cold dead hands  )

I like the Abyss 2nd stage because it is all metal, which reduces dry mouth, and it is a little larger, so it disperses the bubbles further to the side which some of the newer, compact 2nd stages don't.

All and all - if you have local service, you won't go wrong with an Abyss.

does anyone know if the mares abyss is any good it is 500 some dollars at sports chalet but cheaper online so is it any good???
Most Regulators are good, mares is good but service in the U.S. is not that Good.
If you live in the u.s. i would stay with Scubapro,Aqualung , Oceanic.
These Regs are serviced here as well as all over the world.
The prices on these regs Are 300-655.00 each company has good, very good and outstanding regs.
If you can get a Mares at dealer who provides good service the Abyss would be a good choice.
When you travel in the Carib you will see more dive shops with Scuba Pro and Aqualung.
You know if you need serviced it will be easy, when on vacation every dive minute counts , so you want to be able to get your reg serviced fast.
You dont want to spend all day looking for a dive shop that handles the brand you have.

Just about any reg out will work. I recently elected to with teh Atomic T2, and after diving that everything seems antiquated, it's light and breathes with almost no effort. IFunny thing is I bought it primarily for the weight savings, we are all painfully aware of the new Airline policies right.
If you have the discretionary resources to buy the Atomic great, the Scubapro Titanium is also reputed to be very good, again the price is in the same range as the Atomic.

You don't have to get a DVT reg. Non-dvt's are still available and will knock at least a hundred bucks off the price. Have your lds call oceanic and see what's available. Personally I'd go with the GT3 and non dvt cdx5. Proven performer and you can find em new for 250 or so. Call scubatoys. They may have some still in stock. I'm thinking oceanic will offer non dvt's for awhile yet. Too many people like me who don't want em. Or get one set up for DIN no dvt for that and buy an adapter. Still less than a dvt reg. In fact scubatoys has an Alpha8( no diver adjust for inhalation but a good warm water second stage) with a cdx5 first for 199 bucks!

I dive a Mares Abyss and I wouldn't use any other reg. You can't get a better reg and I don't have any problems getting my regs serviced. I just take to my local Mares dealer.

I agree that it is a very good choice, my dealer discouraged me from getting mares ( even though he is a dealer) because Mares was slow about getting gear and parts to them.
Where you live outside usa may be easier to get parts.
:D

yes I have seen the Atomics, good reputation, nice looking but too pricey for me. there is a LDS around here that carries them but the price is way out of my league. So far I have been very very pleased with Oceanic ( all of my gear is) is too bad that new DVT from Oceanic gives them an excuse to jack up prices

Keep in mind that the Atomics have a 2-year (I believe and/or 200 dive) service interval compared to 1-year/100 dives with most others. You'll make back ~$100 your first year by skipping the service.

i have the mares abyss and I absolutely love it. easy breathing at any angle. mares also has the lifetime service policy where they will pay for parts and you just pay labor on the annual service.

My LDS is the biggest Mares dealer in Ontario,so that's probably why there isn't an issue with parts.

I'll second the Zeagle Envoy Deluxe.
