I have to say that I'm impressed with my local shop. I was looking at their fill station a few minutes ago--they have system sampled every 2-3 months for purity and was reading the analysis, which they have posted. They actually have a very elaborate setup.
They pump O2-compatible air so now I don't have to worry about screwing up my O2 clean tanks.

Walter:
He is correct. Filling them with air from air whip will contaminate your tanks. OTOH, if they are doing partial pressure fills, they have a clean air whip they can use to fill your tanks.

Unless his tanks aren't o2 clean to start with - think premix only....

Spratman:
I got the same treatment last year at the quarry fill station. I made the same argument about being O2 cleaned. Waste of time. So, I went over to Vance's site and picked up some Voodoo Gas & This is not your tank stickers. If it still doesn't work, I don't need to buy anything from them anyway. Plenty of other shops that do partial pressure fills!

He claims it prevents noobs from picking up the wrong tank and actually BREATHING NITROX!! :11:

Max depth is like 90 ft.....

Yes and if you grab my 50/50 bottle, its 1.6atm @70ish. Goto to 90, you risk an oxtox hit.

I do have some of Vance's stickers and they are going on my 50/50 tanks and stages after this year's VIP.

Maybe he could fill your tires with nitrox. . . I hear nitrogen is good for tires. . .

Nitrogen is great for tires.

additional oxygen (nitrox) isn't.... it causes more expansion with friction of use (heat). using only Nitrogen reduces that. using way too much o2 could cause hydrocarbon flame up issues.

There are a lot of tire shops that are filling tires with only nitrogen now.

I've been told that race crew pit crews use nitrogen in their air tools to change tires in pit stop because it allows the impact guns to run cooler and not overheat, which could cause delays in the pits and decrease the chances of winning.

Do the fillups come with little green valve caps?

Common sense is greatly lacking. If someone picks up my tank and dies with it because they didn't analyze it that's their own stupid fault.
well if OW don't cover this now, and there are lots of people who got certified in the past but have not taken a Nitrox class and know nothing about using an analyzer - how exactly are they supposed to know? How is this their "stupid fault?"

I thought the idea of obvious tank bands was an attempt at a warning to these folks that something is up. Seems it's past time the agencies addressed this issue, but that still does nothing for the people already certified.

It doesn't matter what they were taught in OW. That is not the point. They shouldn't be using my tank because it is MY tank and not theirs. They don't have to take a nitrox class to know that.

They shouldn't even be TOUCHING my tank...

My tanks have my name on them in sharpie (and they're DIN - to avoid even more confusion)

but I agree... you don't need to take a Nitrox class to know that if it's not yours - don't touch.

:D

playing devils advocate here a bit - by definition, people renting tanks have to touch tanks that aren't theirs.

I would agree if it's otherwise somehow obvious a tank belongs to someone it's less of a problem - name in purple, DIN valves, doubles, whatever. But plenty of places there's a pile of rentals and other tanks people have left to fill all in the same general area and it's not as obvious as it could be. I'm not saying stickers are exactly the best solution here, and actually they're not when they're not used consistently anyway. But calling people stupid when there is a good chance they have no way to know better is a little harsh.

How do they know it's yours ??? I'm guessing there's something that distinguishes your tanks from everyone else's ? Same principal. Your tanks are marked/different to avoid confusion - that's exactly what a Nitrox sticker is for. The stickers are a dive industry standard, and it's when selfish idiots think they can operate outside the standards that people get hurt.
