Hairless cats are ugly little suckers. I am not trying to get a big fancy breed cat or anything, just curious what I should be considering when I do go to get a cat?

I would visit your local animal shelter. I think most (if not all) allow you to interact with the cats before adoption. Tell them what you're looking for and handle different types of cats that fit your profile.

Also, if you have kids, some cats are better suited to them than others. Another good question to ask while you're at the shelter.

I'd avoid long haired cats. However all cats I've had have shed hair, mainly come summer. A HEPA vac works wonders for the hair.

Different breds have different personalities - I now live with a Manx, a tailless bred (although it's better to have a stum than be a show quality pure tailless). They walk differently than other cats, and follow you around the house, usually a few feet away.

Ok cat owners, I was thinking of getting a pet cat. This would pretty much be my first pet cat (had a street kitty as a pet for a couple weeks until he found a better sucker to take care of him)

So the question is which cat breeds are best and why? I would be looking for a cat that doesn't shed a lot.

Most domestic cats are just that. They do have their own personalities. We have
had Siamese cats for the last 25 years and most have been very affectionate. It
really depends on how they are raised as kittens. As for shedding, the two we have
now, the female sheds little, while the male we could make sweaters from him!

We had a manx once and she bonded only with my wife, she was a terror when it
came to me. If she was lying on my wife I could not come near, I was bloodied more
than once!

Somali and Cornish Rex cats tend to shed less than others. However, I am a big proponent of taking home shelter critters. I used to rescue dogs, so I'm admittedly a bit biased. :)

If you are looking for a cat that doesn't shed much because you are worried about allergies, hairless cats will not fit the bill. It's pet dander that irritates allergies, not hair, and dander comes from the skin. Er....hairless cats have plenty of skin. :)

Naw, the shedding thing isn't about allergies I just don't want to have to take cat hair sweaters off of every surface.

I call those "mohair" sweaters. They have mo hair on them than the cat does.:D
