How much should I spend on new Gear

i almost think that at the open-water level, save some of the money, and spend a bit more on training. that way you get to experience a little more of what scuba has to offer, and generally, if the shop takes care of you, you can use their equipment for free for training..

either way, if you continue scuba diving you end up spending the same amount of money, on training and equip. but if you wait on equipment, you can make a more educated, experienced descision on what to buy. (having used different types of rental regulators..)

this was my approach... sort of

what i did is i bought very basic, no frills stuff to get myself equiped
and diving (and not having to rent)

i spent just under $700 for my BC, regs, computer, and wetsuit, and then
kept my ears open to learn about different types of gear and configurations,
tried a few things that caught my eye, and so on

in about a year, i started leaning towards cave diving, so i exchanged my BC
for a backplate/wings and bought an extra regulator, but kept my old regulator
as my second regulator for cave diving (i still dive it). i still have the same
wetsuit, though i only use it for ocean diving now (i do the cave diving in
a dry suit). i also bought a better computer once i understood what i needed/
wanted.

so you see... my initial purchase wasn't "top of the line" stuff cause i figured
i'd have to change equipment anyway as my diving grew
