Thank you for all the information

i think it's way too high

check out scubatoys.com

http://scubatoys.com/store/Scuba_Package_BC_Reg.asp

you can get a Dacor/Aeris package for $520, and update
to a nitrox computer for $200 more

so for $720, you can have a very nice package

a Bare Velocity full 7/6 mm is $215

so you're talking $935 US for a starter kit

you may not even want to get a package... do some looking around
and you can find some nice deals...

Oceanic Probe Regulator: $380
http://scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=OceanicProbe

Oceanic Reg, Octo, Nitrox Computer, and SPG: $530
http://scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=WristPackage

Bare Velocity 7/6 $215
http://scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=Velocity7mmFullMen

i think this is a better set up (wrist computer and SPG instead of
console) for $1,125

this is just an example... you could probably save more if you look around

what do I tell him

lol... my thinking is, either

1. ok, here's my money

or

2. that's too expensive, i am not going to buy it

First I would be careful about saying someone is trying to "rip you off". He gave you a price, you don't have to pay it. The price sounds about right for full retail at most of the shops around here. If you don't want to pay full retail you are going to have to do some work.

Shop around. Look on ScubaToys for the gear you think you might want. Price it - don't forget to add shipping and perhaps customs duties. Then go to several stores and see if they are prepared to give you a package that comes close.

OR

Go to the stores tell them your budget, get the package price and compare the bits and pieces on the internet and see if they are close. If so buy, if not move on. There are at least 10 shops within a half hour's drive - I am sure one will get you what you want, or you can buy online.

Re "he is expects me to buy there" so what, spend your money where you want.

Here is what is included in my package, as stated by the seller.

1. Mares MR12 Proton
2. Axis Octupus
3. 3 guage mini console
4. Dacon Weight intigrated BCD
5. 7/6 mm Wetsuit

$2000 Canadian That is $1725 American

i have no experience or knowledge on the items listed but in general i've noticed the following things on this board at least: (a) a lot of divers here prefer to have the instruments at their wrists/forearms rather than in a console (other than spg perhaps), (b) many seem to prefer a backplate and wing bcd to jacket bcd, and (c) a lot of people think a drysuit is better for cold water than a thick wetsuit if you can afford it.

I'm just bringing this stuff up because a lot of new divers haven't thought about these issues... But you should buy whatever makes you happiest in the water given your budget.

i almost think that at the open-water level, save some of the money, and spend a bit more on training. that way you get to experience a little more of what scuba has to offer, and generally, if the shop takes care of you, you can use their equipment for free for training..

either way, if you continue scuba diving you end up spending the same amount of money, on training and equip. but if you wait on equipment, you can make a more educated, experienced descision on what to buy. (having used different types of rental regulators..)
