I was using that as a example.
more often than not. i see people get flamed...
or
do a search
take your search and.........
its a forum. for diccussion.....
not a search engine. mabye the person asking the question did a search, and was lookin for more input..
my pont is not about fins, but the general attitude given to people just because they dont know...
in any case.. im not directing this to any one in particular, just a in general observation ive made alot on this board refering to this topic...

So you ask a question, get the answers...but, then its turns out to an example question, because the response didn't fit with your general observation (Which is back to being flamed....)

Do you see any issues here?

it was a example to begin with..
im fimilar with alot of the whys,
i was simply stating that so many are quick to dismiss people as trolls when they have legit questions...
did you even read this thred or just jump onto bustin my chops?

AGAIN. mabye when people ask,, answer them with a real answer..
not
do a search
or i think hes a troll....

i think that the answer to the question was fine...
it was the
"if youi did a search you would find the answer" that makes the whole post seem smug

I would disagree with this comment.

DIR divers are nothing if not critical thinkers ... in fact, what differentiates the GUE class from other classes I've taken is the amount of time they spend dwelling on "why" ... I was rather impressed with the fact that no matter what aspect of the system I asked about they had a logical, rational reason for it's being included.

I failed to point out, and I don't mean to appear to backpedal, but I have never attended a GUE class, so I am not well informed about GUE classes, and I am fully aware of that. In fact, I wouldn't mind attending a GUE class: as a parasite looking for useful information.

During my certifications (NASDS and NAUI), we investigated alternate solutions, and the instructors left it up to the student to use that knowledge for gear selection and technique, but I am not seeing that in the methods discussed on scubaboard.com (the limit of my exposure to DIR ideology). In honesty though, I perceive the solutions presented by the DIR community to be well thought out (and consequently derived from critical thought), but they appear to be presented as gospel (dogmatic), and, from my perspective, appear to lack understanding of alternate (non DIR embraced choices). I fully realize I am ill informed to draw that conclusion firmly, it just smells that way.

Welcome to the Internet. People that have been around a long time get annoyed by frequently asked questions asked my newbies. This is not a phenominon which is unique to scuba diving boards or DIR. It is the fuel which drives much of the Internet. I know that it existed back as long ago as 1989 when I found Usenet. It will be around long after I am gone. When I say "use the search function" it is not smugness, it is frustration. It is particularly frustrating that you turn this into some anti-DIR paranoia, when its just general Internet pissiness that you can find anywhere.

I don't see anything wrong with directing someone to the search feature. It's an invaluable tool. 99.9% of the time people don't mean anything snotty about it.

I don't understand why people don't use it more often. Most of these topics have been covered over and over. Sure...if you want to talk about something, then jump right in. But why not exert a little effort to learn something about the subject first?

BTW, I rarely see DIR folks respond in the manner that you suggest. Most of them are very willing to answer the whys and hows.

well i must admit, i dont spend much time in the dir forums.
i do adopt some of the ideas, but not the whole deal.
in any case the few times i have looked at some the the "why" thread i see alot of the answers i mentioned..
but there are alot of good answers too.. i was refering to the people who do the "smug" posts........
i wasnt makin this a anti-DIR post
but yeah its general frustration. i just seem to see it alot more on this topic....
and im not the only one...
to tose who give good answers.. good for you it what we are here for.. keep it up
to those who think there better than everyone else...... whatever..

What's worse? The newby that doesn't take advantage of the search functions and posts version 4803 of the same question or the the more seasoned cybernaut that stomps the newby because he can no longer emotionally cope with the irritation of seeing the same question asked again and again?

Your observation seems to be contradicted by these comments in this thread:

Then go ahead and ask a legit question.

Lamont, the need to read and answer every post on the board is a heavy burden and one that you shouldn't feel the need to shoulder by yourself. When you feel the frustration overpowering you, turn the computer off and go diving. Do that often enough and pretty soon your DIRF rating won't be provisional.

Nice selective editing to "prove" your point. Too bad you missed where we answered the question, but even that wasn't good enough for him.

Damn, I'm out of popcorn....be right back :D
