Diesel298:
it was a example to begin with..
im fimilar with alot of the whys,
i was simply stating that so many are quick to dismiss people as trolls when they have legit questions...
did you even read this thred or just jump onto bustin my chops?

AGAIN. mabye when people ask,, answer them with a real answer..
not
do a search
or i think hes a troll....

i think that the answer to the question was fine...
it was the
"if youi did a search you would find the answer" that makes the whole post seem smug

I believe if you spent some time to think about it you'd see that using the search function is one of the better alternatives. You can usually find your answer in a few minutes, and generally speaking you'll find more info then you needed not less. However if you don't try prefacing your question by stateing that "after searching here I can't find" ???

It usually puts those old salty dogs in a better mood and keeps them from biting too often.:D

I'd add too that if you enter into questioning people with the assumption that you are going to get your head bit off, then almost any answer they give that is not posed in a way to "sooth" your emotional predisposition may come off as "smug" to you when in fact it may not be.
Food for thought

From experience on (too many) other boards:

Getting asked the same questions for the 10th time gets dull. Searching is not hard. If you don't find what you're looking for say "Hey, I've used the search for X but didn't find what I was looking for. I was wondering ....".

Otherwise people post things like
search.jpg

etc.

;)

Edit: I had to hunt for it, but there is also an amazingly helpful presentation

Post in good health :)

What's worse? The newby that doesn't take advantage of the search functions and posts version 4803 of the same question or the the more seasoned cybernaut that stomps the newby because he can no longer emotionally cope with the irritation of seeing the same question asked again and again?

Yah...I hate to see anyone get shut down harshly.

reefraff:
Your observation seems to be contradicted by these comments in this thread:

I don't know...

I suspect Diesel's lead-in...

... "i noticed anytime somone asks a question about DIR
somone always lables them a troll.
seems to me there are some DIR people that are a bit touchey about explaining there DIR methoods to others. like its a members only secret..
more purple kool-aid please"

...probably primed the pump.

Anyways...back to the topic...

I agree with you that originally "Hogarthian" was much more than just gear. Exactly how much more... I don't know. I've read some things that suggests that it also included a team approach and a focus on fitness but any more than that seems a mystery. Fact is, the guys that brought us "Hogarthian" have not been very willing to talk about it much. One solitary post from Main and a few other posts by Gavin and English and that's about it. There simply isn't much to go on. Because of this, I think the only choice we have is to use the term as a descriptor of gear configuration... and even that is best defined by DIR.

Lamont, the need to read and answer every post on the board is a heavy burden and one that you shouldn't feel the need to shoulder by yourself. When you feel the frustration overpowering you, turn the computer off and go diving. Do that often enough and pretty soon your DIRF rating won't be provisional.
LOL - Lamont needs to update his profile ... ;)

Diesel298:
Everytime i see some post a question about "WHY" on this forum. they get flamed, and are considered a troll....
Gee, if you go back and look at who brought up the "troll" thing in this thread, you'll notice it was someone who has since said DIR is not for him (posts 11 and 20). Draw your own conclusions ...

Diesel298:
one thing im curious about is whats DIR got aganst the various fin designs?
ive seen that question posted a few times with no real answer given......

Well ... hmmm ... I've answered that question myself several times. Would do so again, but I have to go get ready for work.

I suspect you'll find the answer in several threads in the "Masks, Fins, and Snorkels" forum ... and not all from DIR divers ...

I think this is what Diesel was talking about

He may not be able to - I've been unable to access that part of my profile for some time. And what ever happened to the "Active Threads" or the "Today's Posts" buttons? But I digress.

Yeah, I may have been a little intemperate but I still think it's a fair question.

I don't know...I suspect Diesel's lead-in...
True enough. Diesel bought it - he should expect to pay for it. It's not necessary to collect every debt, however, and breaking knees isn't always the best place to start.

Like I said, history belongs to the victors. The Hogarthian <insert adjective> was about more than just gear, it just wasn't enough more about more than just gear. You might be right about surrendering and letting the DIR crowd define the terms but I'm just quixotic enough to not mind the occasional tilt against the windmill. Besides, this is the Hog forum - tweaking DIR noses isn't just allowed in here, sometimes it's a civic duty. ;)

Now, what was this thread about? Oh, yeah,
KOMPRESSOR:
In my fog of understanding, I thought these two (HOG & DIR) was strongly connected. From some of the answers I've read to my and other's questions, it seems something can be Hogarthian, but not DIR
I'd say he has a good understanding. They are closely connected, DIR being an outgrowth of Hogarthian. The superset analogy still seems to hold true: you can be a Hog diver without being DIR but you can't be DIR without being a Hog diver. Ultimately, the history isn't that important. I think that the best way to sum up the current state of affairs is thusly: DIR is an all-or-nothing proposal with little room for compromise. Those of us with "issues" with DIR or who are too namsy-pamsy to buy the whole loaf, (the so-called "DIR Lite" crowd) will always be at least a little unwelcome in the DIR tent but the Hog divers will be happy to set a plate at the table for you.

Anybody want to put the popcorn down and go diving???
