I think you could solve the problem simply with layering. I did it - but for different reasons, lead weight reduction. I use a 3mm full suit year round in upstate NY. I add one or more non-buoyant underfullsuits (Henderson Polyolefil & LavaCore are examples) as needed. I dive to low 40's°F with only an added 3mm vest (of course hood & gloves) and noly need 12# of lead. I would never go to a dry suit. Way too much expense and additional learning curve. Way easier to layer.
