It seems like the only thing these protect against is the accidental bonk, right? If that's true, something super thin and light would be enough.

Ergodyne Scullerz are baseball cap inserts for exactly that purpose, and they're available on Amazon for ~5USD. I wonder if they'd work well for this too? Maybe wear them under your hood? If you're worried about your hood getting torn up you could always dive with a beanie! Or just add a bungee for a chin strap...

Sometimes they need to offer protection and usability out of the water too, combined with the stability to hold back-up/caving torches.
