That’s what I thought, too. After reading the Course Outcomes, there’s probably a method to the madness (or sadness).

3.1.5 Master Diver

3.1.5.1 Course Outcomes

GUE’s Master Diver course is a limited decompression course structured to prepare divers for deeper recreational diving while using sound equipment, efficient diving skills, and advanced breathing mixtures. Course outcomes include, but are not limited to: skill cultivation and refinement; knowledge of relevant physics and physiology; familiarity with the theory and practice of decompression; correct ascent procedures; the use of the GUE double tank configuration; the use of nitrox for decompression; the use of helium-enriched breathing mixes to minimize narcosis, CO2, gas density, and post-dive “nitrogen stress;” and the use of a single decompression stage for accelerated decompression techniques.

I think it's to align to the rest of the industry so if someone tells a dive operator they're "rec 3" or "rec 2" they don't have to explain it...

It's just funny when you look at CCR Cave or Cave DPV and they are "mastery level" classes.

Notably, IMO, the standards have strengthened. Becoming an instructor is much more challenging now.
Can I ask where the source is for this? I might not have read enough information, but it seems they just rebranded all existing courses with a few minor changes to the equipment configuration.

The latest version of the GUE Standards, Version 10.1, introduces additional requirements for each instructor certification levels. This update ensures that instructor candidates possess adequate experience pertinent to the courses they wish to teach, reflecting a commitment to maintaining high training quality. While some may perceive these additional requirements as challenging, they ultimately serve to uphold the standards of excellence that students expect from GUE instructors. You can check the new standards GUE Standards, Version 10.1

Wow, I thought that was GUE's requirement for its instructors from the very beginning.

The minimum number of dives required for people teaching on the tech and cave side are increased rather significantly it looks like.

I just finished reading that part and yep it does look like so (but: disclaimer I didn't read the version before). I wonder if it affects instructors who did their qualifications prior to this new document but hasn't been signed off yet?

The decision is typically case by case and at the program director's discretion. My understanding is that these requirements existed before but were not documented. Each instructor must be reviewed by the panel and program directors before their application proceeds, and they generally ensure that instructors have adequate diving experience for the classes they will teach.
