What I find hilarious is the fact that some seem to think that the desire for a smoke removes all ability to think rationally and quickly. Just another example of people trying to support their feelings with nothing more than fluff.

If you do not like smokers, then at least man up and tell them that is why you do not want to buddy up with them. Creating a BS excuse like "You'll be thinking about smoking" is ridiculous.

How about this: it significantly INCREASES your risk of a severe cardiovascular incident thereby creating unjustified risk when diving in a team oriented fashion. And thinking that exercising is stopping that indicates considerable ignorance, which is something else i dont want to buddy with.

I don't disagree with you ... I'm just saying it does happen.

FWIW - I wouldn't want to take a class where I'm required to do air shares with a smoker. Real air share would be different ... but for practicing, I don't want to have to put a reg in my mouth that tastes like an ashtray.

The taste of the reg was the last thing on my mind in training when I had to buddy breathe with a smoker... too much other stuff going on to notice.

That I would say is justified. The brain does not shut down for want of a cigarette as some are trying to imply.

OK Let me start

  • You stink
  • You're clearly addicted to a substance
  • A small high is worth risking numerous medical issues to you.
  • You're at a higher risk for DCS
  • Your body retains more co2, causing co2 narcosis.
I've worked with smokers before, and that's why I don't want to dive with them.

Well.. I smoke, I go to the gym about 5 times a week and run and cycle alot.. Smoking is something I've been bought up around, and at the moment I have no intention to quit smoking..

Sorry if this thread has been created before..
I admit I didn't search

I just wondered why it was there..?
I'm fit, and yes I would probably be fitter if I didn't smoke, but I'm still in alot better shape than most people..
And my SAC rate is better than alot of divers I've dived with.

And the Reg tasting like ashtray/smoke.. Come on?
I don't have a Cigarette for at LEAST 20 minutes before a dive because of the increased pulse/blood pressure..
I don't think SAC rate has anything to do with it. I could care less what your SAC is, .4 or .8 we can plan for that.

I don't smoke but all points are very true. The stinking one I would have argued a bit until I quit smoking 2.5 years ago......now I definitely agree.

me too. I smoked for years. smokers stink but dont realize it until they are non-smokers :)

Actually, it does. A smoker won't notice, because you're used to it. But to a non-smoker, it's pretty disgusting.

If you want to smoke, that's your choice.

If I don't want to associate with you because you smoke, that's my choice.

If GUE doesn't want to associate with you because you smoke, that's their choice.

We all have equal right to our choices.

I noticed ... damn near gagged, in fact. Couldn't wait to give it back ...

One of those detrimental affects is your inability to take fundies.

Well played :clapping:. Hilarious.

I'm not trying to say its wrong..

Obviously Diving and Smoking aren't going to mix.. and you as a Diver should accept that.. I just thought it was odd that an agency would say you can't dive because you smoke.. but yes you are right, it is there choice..

I think you are all being a bit narrow minded, saying you wouldn't dive with someone, or associate yourselves with someone because they smoke.. its there choice.. for instance, I have friends that do stuff I wouldn't approve of.. but there still my friends..

and for the record to do with Cardiovascular problems..
I am 19 years old..
I'm sure there are a few people over 40 doing GUE or whatever.. SO there chances are alot higher than mine anyway..

But anyway, I wasn't trolling.. Just wondered why?

I've seen some decent reasons, but it does make me wonder about some people when they think just because I smoke means I don't care about safety.. and won't be a good buddy because I'm thinking about my next "fix" because its not like that at all
