The most interesting aspect of buying my scuba gear has been the amazingly wonderous commercial world!

I have my BCD (thanx to my wonderful boyfriends' idea of the perfect b-day present) already, but i am looking for a dive computer!

I love technical toys, but some of these toys are a little too much for me. i would like to keep it simple, yet up to date and not too expensive. Any suggestions? I have also heard that buying regulators or computers online is very risky, but there are some good deals on new things.
One day my days in college will (hopefully) pay off and i will be able to afford more than beer and pizza. hehehe.

I recommend that you get a Suunto Vyper. There are computers with mixed gas calculations, wireless transmitters etc. but they are a waste of money. The Vyper will support all the diving you can do now and also give you Nitrox capability as well as downloading the data to your computer.

If you get into any type of tech diving, then you can turn the computer into gauge mode and you will be set. Don't let people trick you into getting all kinds of crap that will cost you a lot of money and provide no benefit to you.

Have fun.

You can also buy a computer for under 200 bucks that serves all of your required needs now, and will handle EANx as well. My little ORCA pilot does the trick for me....I see no reason not to use it...even in my future DIR diving.

If you plan on eventually getting the whole gear setup I have one peice of advice:

Buy the best regulator you can afford and go kind of cheap on the computer. A good reg will last you a lifetime. You can use the same reg no matter what type of diving you eventually decide to do if you buy a good one right off the bat.

He is absolutely right about buying the best reg you can. My advise would be to put off any purchases until you can afford to buy what you feel is the best option. If all you can afford to buy is the same equipment they rent then there isn't too many advantages to owning your own gear, or atleast thats the way I see it. The only recomendation I would make is that if and when you purchase a computer look for one that is Nitrox compatible because if you take diving seriously you will more than likely want to become nitrox certified in the future.

Also, if you get a chance to try out some gear before buy you better off. I doubt most shops in the area have the gear to rent or loan out but I think you may be able to sweet talk some one into a test dive now and then.

Wow. thx guys. i am buying a reg from my boyfriend that is maybe a year old for like $250., a sweet deal. its a new, uh, man. i forgot the name of it..maybe Scubapro. no. well, anyway, it makes you like like Darth Vader because its black and more of a triangular shape. It breaths very easily and it will save me over $200. I am very excited about it!!

I will definately want to get Nitrox because i just joined Bluegrass Diving Club last night. I would love to go on all those trips they have planned, far out in the world to see all the shipwreck wonders. i have to get my advanced first of course. Any one in the club or want to join?? Always looking for new people!!
