Hi Divers,
With the Suunto Gekko out to market in late 2003, I'm curious, is it worth it? COnsidering almost $100 difference (In my LDS, Gekko=$250, Vyper=$330), I really consider Gekko, but I can't find a decent review or experience. Rodale also haven't review the Gekko.

About my dive profile, I have no plan to go to Tec. I will do Night Dive (Gekko only use phosporescent display, should I worry about this?) and also Nitrox (Both of them support it, right).

From the manual, Gekko have a slight upper hand, aside from price. The battery of Gekko last longer than Vyper. And although Gekko being said that it has no PC INterface, it also stated that Chamber can still access dive data through Gekko. I thought someone will improvise to make the PC interface in the future.

What I'm looking for is the real experience of person using Gekko, especially for Night and Deep Dive. It would be better if that person also has experience with Vyper.

Many thanks.

Sorry - don't know about the Gekko -but I have a Vyper and I love it!

They're pretty similar. Main differences are:

- Vyper has a PC download capability, the Gekko does not
- Vyper has a dive-simulator, the Gekko does not.
- Vyper has a gauge mode, the Gekko does not.
- Vyper has a backlight, the Gekko has a glow-in-the-dark display

There are some other differences like settings for sample rates and memory size (Gekko has more memory) but this covers the basics.

Well I have bought the Gekko but won't be using it untill April 16. As i will be taking my Advanced OW including nitrox and night dive, it will get a thorough workout. i will report back after my return from Cayman on the 25th. used a viper rental on previous dives and found the display a little too small for my eyes.

I'm not a tech diver and only wanted a computer to keep better track of things as i have started doing more multiple dives.

BTW i have done night dives without a computer and shining your light on the guages occasionally keeps them visable. I'm not using the computer as a depth guage or even a timer. like i said i mostly wanted it to avoid dcs on my second or third dive of the day while getting more bottom time than the tables would allow.

good luck on your choice, but price was important for me.

.

The Gekko is the same size as the viper, so if you found the display on the viper too small, you will have the same problem with the Gekko.

The batteries ar the same.
Gekko does have slightly more memory than the vyper.
I doubt that anyone will be able to make a cable soon as many have tried but cannot succeed.
Yes your LDS can acces the gekko, but that is only for the purpose of deleting the repitive dive memory. This is for when the computer is in rental, so that the afternoon user will not be handicapped by the morning dives.
As far as worrying about which one is more technically advanced, they are the same.

Simply put, if you are big on downloading your dives and seeing the profile etc. (which is really cool) they go vyper it is worth the extra otherwise go for the gekko. I can't say that I have ever used the simulation mode on my vyper.

Thanks Dave. I will be waiting for your report

How often and important is the Dive simulator and gauge mode? Again, I'm not doing any tech diving, and probably will plan my own trip in the future. Is dive planner sufficient enough for planning a day trip?

I don't think I would ever use the dive simulator. Tek divers find gauge mode indispensible but most divers probably wouldn't.

Anyway I wasn't make a value judgement about the differences. I was just listing them. It's up to you to make the value judgement in relation to your own style of diving.

Most companies will probably drop their air only computers. Suunto may be leading the pack, this is not a stripped down Vyper, I believe it’s the replacement for their air only computer. The other companies will follow suite. The addition of nitrox once sold for a big premium; it not longer does and the addition of nitrox to a computer is probably not that difficult or costly. This computer will become their entry level.
