DaveG:
ok maybe it wasn't the viper cause the gekko is larger than what i used

Perhaps you used the Mosquito, its sized like a wrist watch. Otherwise it functions just about the same as the Vyper.

I have the Vyper and my wife has the Gekko. If you don't care about not being able to download the profile then go for the gekko. I like the gekko's phospholuminecent display, you don't have to worry about hitting the light button everytime you look at it at night or in low vis.

Tony.

That's a very useful comment Tony, about the phospor display.

I think I'm almost make up my mind here. I will stick to the Vyper, hoping that their price will drop due do diver switching to Gekko. I need to save up more money though.

yep it was just about the same size as my ciitizen dive watch.

DM said it was titanium and cost about $900. that was a year ago.

Well I have bought the Gekko but won't be using it untill April 16. As i will be taking my Advanced OW including nitrox and night dive, it will get a thorough workout. i will report back after my return from Cayman on the 25th.

Dave,
Have you use your Gekko? How is it?

I got a chance to play around with my friend's Gekko. Not using it in a real dives though, but I think it is a best computer for money.

seven dives on the gekko and it is just fine.
2 dives were nitrox and it would not let me switch back to air until the no fly time passed. no problem just use 21% nitrox. night dive was no problem either, just shine your light on it.

if you dive air and want nitrox, it won't let you switch until no fly passes. so if you plan to do air followed by nitrox, use nitrox 21% for your air dives.

no download is ok with me. you can replay your passed dives in logbook mode. it shows your depth and time throught the dive and also show any warnings like ascending too fast or too short safety stops.

Vytec and Cobra are the only two with air integration.
Only Vytec has wireless air int.
Stinger, Vytec, Cobra, and Vyper all have 150ft max depth display, but Gekko and mosquito only have up to 99ft
All have backlight except for Gekko, which uses phosphorescent display
All have log book. profile memory capacity of 36h, Gekko has 50h
Stinger samples 6 times a minute, mosquito 3 times, Vytec, Vyper and Cobra4 times, Gekko twice
Stinger and Mosquito have dual time calender clock, watch mode, and stopwatch capability.
Gekko has no gauge mode.
All have O2 setting from 21-50 except Vytech, which has 21-99 and the ability to switch gas twice in a dive.

I used a Favor S before(the one Gekko is suppose to be "replacing") and now I'm using a cobra, I think the Suunto system is very easy to work with (3 buttons) and they are very conservative computers.

I think you mean 150m and 99m? 99ft is quite shallow?

Dave, thanks for the info and tips for using air and nitrox.

i know for sure that the gekko records 124ft. that is as deep as i went. not sure what the max is, but for planning you can go to 150 before the max time shows zero.

the nitrox setting seems to be unlimited. not sure where you would use less than 21%. it reverts back to 21% after about 6 hours of surface time. make sure you check it before each nitrox dive.

i think it stores 99 dive profiles, but at seven to ten dives per year it may take quite a while to find what the max is.

I bought a stinger on E Bay brand new and I use it for both diving and free diving. I dont think I could ask for more. I am a Mac person so I did get a few head aches buying a PC lap top and making it all work.
