Fellow Divers,

I've made scuba diving for the last 10 years.

I've more then 500 logged dives...

During some periods I stop diving for 5 or 6 months... I always had problems of weight increase and sometimes dind't feel fit enough to dive. But dive is a passion and I always made a big efort to control my weight and return underwater!

The problem is that since I remember, my IMC was always above 29 or 30... Now it's over 40 and I've made a decision: I need help to reach a normal weight!

After failed attempts with diets recomended by nutritionists and lots of efforts with exercise, the problem remains... After a while my weight increases again and the problem remains!

Last month I decided to make a surgery, before I really have health problems besides the obesity!

I'm now being prepared to be submited to a gastric bypass... Acording to the surgeon, this surgery will allow me to lose all the excess weigth and mantain the results for the future.

I asked him about implications in scuba! I told him that I prefer to die younger and still be able to dive, then live long without diving! :depressed:

What kind of life is to be healthy and regular wheigth, but no be able of "living"?

He told me that after fully recovering from the surgery, I'll be able to dive without any problem.

Have any of you ever lived this experience? Is't safe and true to believe that I will return scuba soon after the surgery?

:depressed::depressed::depressed:

Sorry for my bad english, but I've tried to explain my problem as well as I can.

Best regards to you all.

Safe Diving!

Hi alphadiver,

Here is what DAN has to say about such procedures. The piece includes a paragraph on considerations regarding return to SCUBA:
