Just out of curiosity where did you rent a 120 in Cozumel, what dive op did you use? I've been wanting to do this dive but refuse to use a single 80.

Aldora rents steel 120's ...

Deep than I should have....

Actually, the family name for any deep dive on a single is a "Viagra Dive" cause its so much prep for a quickie

I suppose I have been to 120' on a single tank, but I've never went into deco with just a single tank (although the NDL's were more liberal then), since doing that leaves virtually no margin for error or room for an equipment failure and is generally regarded as a really bad idea.

That's not a new concept either - it was well established (and widely ignored) when I did my first deco class in 1985/86. It's interesting (but not surprising) that people did stupid **** then, and still do stupid **** now.

I've done 143ft on an al80 - Blue Hole Belize. Gorgeous dive! Absolutely loved every minute and I was probably a lil narced but I didn't notice any detrimental effects. Stayed close to my buddy and fooled around with my camera. Stayed within NDL limits - they had tanks hanging on the line for safety stop, only one guy had to use em.

Recent was 157ft on a 121steel. Worst dive of my life and not afraid to admit it. We changed our dive plan at the last minute (getting too hot suited up so went in early), dropped lower then planned. I didn't have my full suit with me (forgot at home) so diving with very little ditcheable weight. Had to deal with major current, which I can handle but this area has down/up/side currents too with the wall. Trying to do too much - "jumping" islands in our drift without being sucked to the other side. I was already tired from jogging earlier, buddy could swim faster and would cause me panic when he was more then 3 feet away. Oh did I mention I think I was narced and not nicely either. I was paranoid, unhappy and just felt really anxious. I tried calming myself down but couldn't, watched my air and I wasn't using more then normal but I just felt so worried about the whole thing. Called the dive early but still didn't make me feel any better. Oh and spent my 15 minutes of deco/safety crying and holding on to a channel marker where the current was so strong the bubbles didn't even go up... just sideways.
-moral of the story is please, please don't go too fast too soon. It feels like crap and really there is no point. I am going to do this dive again.. but starting back at 100 ft and work down as I get comfortable.

There are at least a few ops on Cozumel with big tanks. We're diving with Aldora Divers in December. 100 & 120cf steels.

On the mainland, Alvaro from AlwaysDiving.com has always provided me with 100 or 120 cf steels when I've asked.

Brockville Narrows, St Lawrence River? Sounds like one of my first big current dives. :)

This year the up and down currents are a little different from usual, too.

You got out to a channel marker?

shorediver - yep good ol' Brockville :)

We came up on a channel marker. See I had thought we had already jumped islands on the south walls because we hit the chain/rope that goes up one side. Turns out we didn't.. but we were kinda pushed into the middle of nowhere almost where the channel marker was buoyed - so I grabbed on and said that's it I'm done. I don't know where I am, can't see any walls anymore, but I see this line and that is what I am doing. My buddy was not impressed, because he knew the area and knew that if we just let go we would hit the next island. Me on the other hand can see that there is crazy current turning each and every way and refused to let go of the line in case we got split up. And actually pretty safe place to be I would think, no ship is going to hit the channel marker :) That was my 3rd or 4th time doing Brockville drift.. but I had never tried that deep or drifting to other islands before. Back to practicing on the North wall!

139' while passing through Hole in the Wall off Jupiter, Al80, warm water, N28.

137' real quick, to "touch the deck" on the ORISKANY, same same. then boogied back up to 80.

Point being, I didn't stay at that depth more than a minute, and listened to the veterans on the boat about what psi to begin ascent (Jupiter)

Second point: There was something I wanted to see at that depth, even if briefly. Going deep "just to do it", with no bottom close below you can be a bad idea, especially on a little AL80.
