Have just come across a GNU based free photo editing program, unfortunately called GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/ Was wondering if anyone had used it and what they thought? Am not going to stop using Photoshop, but am always interested to look at other products, as often they perform certain tasks better or easier.

I use Gimp exclusively. It is very powerful, but (I have heard), not as powerful as PS. There are many lessons on the net about Gimp.

I will recommend another powerful, (and free program), it is not an editor (although it will edit a little). The program is called Irfanview. http://www.irfanview.com/ . I use it to convert pictures from my camera, to a size I can e-mail. It will also save and open many file types.

I am a big fan of GNU products, I really like free.

Both GIMP and the irfanview programs are good. Haven't used GIMP that much but when I did I found it was fairly similar to PS in terms of the user interface, mind you that was quite a while ago so I'm sure they've improved it. The irfanview program is really cool. Not sure who recommeded it earlier but I downloaded it and WOW! Especially for a free program - to make it even better the install is only a meg or two... finally no more bloatware!

Anyone know where I can download Gimp without having to be a computer programmer? I'm trying to find a site where I can download it all in one zip file or something. I tried their website, but I'm really not smart enough to figure it out.

The easiest, but slowest way, is to go to http://jonnythan.com/gimp and download the two things there. It's slow because I don't have a lot of bandwidth.

The fastest way is to go to http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html and download GTK+ then Gimp. You'll have to unzip both of these, and then run the installer. The ones on my page are the installers themselves, no unzipping required.

Thanks guys. I finally figured it out though. Must be the nitrogen. Or the booze.
