 Prick, balls, and dope?

I used to react to people calling them flippers, now it doesn't really matter. Goggles and masks are a different creature altogether though.

Haha thanks Andy. I do enjoy a good backronym.

Rite of passage as a little kid.

First you got your goggles and if you were
lucky, a snorkel, and then, maybe flippers.

The diving documentary dudes called it
"life giving oxygen" for extra flashiness

Then if you were lucky enough to bump into
a "Skindiver" they became masks, and fins.

Flippers: several dolphins with the same name
a broad, flat limb without fingers used for swimming by various sea animals
a lever in a pinball machine

Fins: an underwater swimmer's flipper :D

I will wear a pair of dive boots but you will NEVER catch me wearing booties!:D

Its almost the same situation as when nondivers mistakingly call air tanks..."oxygen tanks"

Of course, eventually you get to the flip side where you habitually refer to your "air" even when your tank is actually filled with nitrox or an even more exotic blend of gases.
