It would be interesting to know about his relationship with the agencies he now teaches for. For example:
- Which agencies?
- Do they know about his expelled status?
- Did they accept him after he was expelled from PADI, or was he already teaching for them?

I know only one PADI instructor who was ever expelled. It was actually the instructor who did the private OW course for my daughter and myself. I of course didn't realize it at the time, but came to learn later that he regularly violated standards, falsified log books (he did ours), and other things that were clearly in violation of PADI standards of conduct. I was glad to see that he was eventually reported, investigated, and expelled.

As the excerpt above states, expulsion is a last resort and only occurs after a very long QA process.

Innocent until proven guilty :coffee:

In this world of disagreement and competition, it is better to ask directly rather than to guess. Here's some reasobale doubt for you, in case you need:

Not all standards relate to safety. As far as I understand, PADI has standards that aim to maximize profit, too. Violate those on purpose, and you'll probably be very unwanted :D This probably applies to any diver certification agency. Standards are a certification agencys primary asset and need to be protected. Remember, these corporations make fortunes by publishing standards and related training material and training and certifying people that certify divers. What happens if you publicly, and repeatedly criticize those standards? And what's that loyalty requirement that PADI instructors are not allowed to criticize PADI?

"This person has been expelled, but we won't tell you why" is my favorite.

But you do have a good reason to ask.

They enter inactive status. They aren't expelled. That takes some sort of a violation.

Not necessarily. Certain legal issues and crimes will get you expelled as well. For example, sexually harassing a student (while not expressly forbidden by standards) would be grounds for expulsion.

So I met this instructor who currently instructs for other agencies. However, he is listed as one of PADI's recently expelled instructors. I can't imagine being forcibly expelled from any agency would be a good thing. Is there any way to find out why he was expelled? Would PADI tell me why he was expelled? Obviously, I don't want to sign up with an instructor that was instructing in an unsafe manner, if that was the reason why he was expelled to begin with. I don't know. But the guy seems like a nice guy so I really don't want to put him on the spot and say "So hey, how come you got expelled from PADI?". I could imagine that may be a fairly awkward conversation!

You can mail or phone PADI and ask them. If they can't say anything, they can't say anything. They won't hold it against you for asking.

I have not personally known anyone who was expelled, but the ones I know of were expelled for sexual encounters during training and gross standards violations during training, in those cases violations resulting in student death. If issues are minor, PADI will almost always use some sort of corrective measure first rather than a permanent expulsion. Expulsion is the result of a serious problem. Despite what it says in post #3, the fact that there are more than 200 names on the expelled list should tell you that it does not take "an act of God" to be expelled from PADI.

Nope. He's listed under special advisories: Divemasters & Instructors not Authorized by PADI | PADI as never having been a PADI member - so not expelled.

If you look at the expelled list: Expelled PADI Instructors and Divemasters | PADI and focus on recent and location, you'll soon have a very short list to choose from.

... there are more than 200 names on the expelled list ...
And the list is only the most recent [-]10[/-] 11 years.

The location given in that list is the one at the time of expulsion. It is not necessarily where they are now....

What does PADI do when an instructor does not pay the annual fee?

Keep bothering me with emails.......

I know of one expelled PADI instructor. He did the academic and pool part of my wife's OW, but before she could do the actual OW part, he was removed because they found out he was a registered sex offender. She had to finish on a referral.
