Unlike most scuba board threads this is very uninformed. Apart from the "if you feel uncomfortable, don't go" but good luck with the cancelation insurance. If you don't want to go the price or cost is irrelevant and it is about how YOU feel

Current FCO advice who are better informed. Dive areas are green

Declared vested interest - travelling with son to dive on Monday.

This FCO advice is what I use. Red or orange is a no for me

Members of our group who went on various tours in Egypt by hired car had police escorts for the full length of daytrips that venture from Hurghada to the more traditional Egypt tourist sites. To me it's troubling that the trip operators and the police (no doubt money changed hands in return for the official police escort, but still) thought that was a necessary precaution.
Standard procedure for the last 25years more or less. One of the measures that came into effect after the Luxor massacre in 1997. No money changing hands, it's the government protecting one of their main sources of income. It's sad, but has helped.
The FCO map posted is in line with many other countries advice and has been this way for ages. To quote the German take on the current situation: "Nevertheless, the security situation in Egypt remains stable and calm overall."

You're at risk of kidnapping in Egypt. Take extra precautions.
Violent crime can happen.
This and most of the other stuff it this text you pasted in here only applies to inland regions where the hill billies live and parts of Sinai, not to where the resorts are by the red sea coast. There are check points along the coast and the tourist areas are like gated communities with armed guards. I can't think of single case of kidnapping or shooting there in over 20 years.

My 24-year-old niece and three female friends went to Egypt earlier this year. Their experience was awful. The men are disrespectful towards women. They were sexually harassed with cat-calling and got marriage proposals every day and made to feel very uncomfortable.

You mean worse than what would happen walking by construction sites in NYC? Have you read about this type of "harassment" in the US recently? Women have to go much worse in the US, much worse. Try to be a woman wearing Hijab in America and let's see what happens.

Let's refrain from bringing politics and cultural prejudices into this thread. It will surely be considered "off topic" and will be moderated.

It's not prejudice. It's a cultural and religious issue. Egyptian women aren't allowed to take part in normal daily life and there is a very strict gender segregation in the country among the locals, maybe not as much in big cities but in rual areas it's pretty bad. The young local guys don't get to interact with local women so some go nuts when they see western women. Which is not very surprising. Of course there is harassment in western countries too, but it's nowhere near as bad as in Egypt. You must be aware of this... as it's sounds you live in the region.
I lived and worked there, not only have I've I heard countless accounts of this, I have seen it.

Apart from the off-topic posts we received here, I appreciate the ones that replied with the answers I was looking for. Thank you very much! This forum have always been helpful!

Just back from the Red Sea : absolutely no problem related to the war in Israel.

When you watch the TV satellite channels from all the surrounding countries (not israeli, of course, even not available), you may be afraid of what you see... but it has always be like this, extremists of all kinds try to conduct a religion war, and it is so for at least 70 years.

Anyway, no security problem on the Red Sea shores in Egypt.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Note from mod team: This thread was cleaned up a bit. Let's try not to turn this thread into a venue for airing anti-Muslim and pro-Muslim sentiment. Thanks.
