When I started diving I wanted to be a tropical / vacation diver. I went and got an Atomic Z-2 which has served me well. But ... I discovered the thrill of ice diving and other cold water diving. I have the option of upgrading my Z2 with a coldwater kit because it is an excellent breather. Part of me thinks it is a compromise and I should sell it and purchase a dedicated cold water reg. I would like to hear from cold water divers, is Atomic Z2 with a cold water kit good enough of should I look into dedicated ice diving regs?

Thanks in advance -

the ice regs are really just an upgrade part of the first stage to keep the diaphragm dry. With the pistons they usually fill it with some sort of goop to keep them dry. Not sure how Atomic combats this, but I prefer diaphragms because sealing them is infinitely easier. Servicing those gooped up pistons is irritating imho. You can just buy a sealed cold water diaphragm. Atomic makes them, not sure of exact models now but I'm sure they have them.
