Monterey is my favorite place in the world to dive (and not just because I live here 🙃) Hopefully, we’ll get you some good conditions for your first diving here! Feel free to DM me if you want any local knowledge or tips.

March is usually pretty “warm” diving at 52-55. After a windy spring, June can be down to 48. And maybe 1 or 2 days in the fall you’ll see up to 58. But your reg should work fine in any of these.

Next items on your list of things to work out should be your exposure protection, then your dive lighting, cause it’s always cold and often dark. But even when it’s not dark, every little crevice and overhang has something cool hiding inside to see with your light.

Much appreciated and just messaged you.

My Mares reg (bought used 20 years ago) is not to my knowledge environmentally sealed and never had a problem in water temps. in the mid 30s F.
I had a MR-12-II freeze up a long time ago in fresh water at about 35 degrees F. It could be that there is a difference between fresh and salt water for freeze-up, though I don’t have specifics on it (should be, actually). And, the MR-12 II has that external Venturi tube, exposed to the water temperature.

I prefer sealed reg in Monterey, not for freezing but because a lot of abrasive stuff in the water most of the time but I have been diving a mk11 EVO lately but the diaphragm type regs are good to go without risk to internal parts.
