Yea, I was just commenting on the male dominated niche. But it isn't cool to say that.
No point whatsoever, just like everything else I say. There were some good posts though.

That diving is male dominated and tek diving totally male dominated is clear. That's just a fact. The question is why it happens. As far as I can see there isn't a big "men only" sign at the door.

What do you think?

R..

Nice photo Gary. Now, you do like like a happy man.

Rob, I am reluctant to really say what I think. I get very misunderstood on these things. I think there are women who tech dive obviously and I think there are regional differences about attitudes. From what I see, men like being together sometimes without women around and that is cool. I think it will always be that way and of course women like to do things together without men around. I think there is something about exploration and the bonding that goes on betwen men when women are not in the mix, that is a force not fully understood. I know it when I see it but don't have the words or the social acceptance to articulate it.
Imagine the guys in Shadowdivers making room for a woman to join their group.... I can't see it. maybe I am wrong, I just felt like putting it out there because I have observed it in different forms my entire life. It seems we have been socialized of late to not speak about it though.

Catherine: I don't see any real barriers to women entering the dive world though. Maybe it's self selecting?

I'm not into tech diving so I can't comment on that aspect, but I find the male / female ratio in diving alot like the ratio in riding sportbikes. Guys outnumber the girls something like 5 or 10 : 1.

I didn't think this was some big secret :)

No, not a secret. maybe you are right..... I am open to being wrong.

.More male bonding. I am sure there are some women around someplace, but you cannot help but wonder if men go to the tropics to be WITH women and the ones that are tech diving, go to get AWAY from women.

Hrmmm -- I dunno about all that --

hey! there she is! the real deal! have you talked story yet about your trip?

Funny, everyone denied the boy's club thing. When I got home I had a few PM's that said "yea, you are right..." I have noticed some people would rather not say what they think on SB. They have public answers and private answers. I'm learning.

This thread has really stirred the pot. I was one who sent a PM last night-- I stand by my comments and I don't think my messages were contradictory or cancel out. But I'll paste the PM here because I don't want anyone to think I won't own my opinions or that I have a public and private face:

"On second thought, I see what you mean. I don't know if you read my reply to your post on the "this kind of diving is fun?" thread or if you were already sick of all the flack by that point, but after I wrote my reply I went and read your thread asking for people to post ice dive pics.... the ones who wrote in really do make it sound like a good ol' boys club, hey? It's not all like that though, really."
