Beezwax, hey you were only one of several. I don't want to stir the pot. It was really an innocent observation, nothing more. Touchy subject, for sure.

I don't want to get anyone upset.

I don't see it as an old boys club for sure. If you have the experience and skills - you dive. I haven't been kept away because I was shaped differently.

There are a few hard-core female divers out there diving the Doria and the other tough deeper stuff out there - If I remember correctly the first chapter of Deep Decent talks about a woman diving it. There are also female Capts out there in the east as well.

But when the stakes are higher - the gear is heavier etc - the number of women choosing to do these dives goes down. It is not the guys keeping the girls away - but the girls who want to throw on a cute dive skin while looking at pretty fishies in high vis as well as not wanting to haul around a bunch of heavy intensive gear making that choice.

well, I guess I had it coming. Fish ID, doing fish counts, and reef surveys, are not to be ridiculed.

seems like the weight of that gear is a reoccuring theme.

This is pretty much a summary of the diving I do and will continue to do as long as I dive. Does this make me a girl? Maybe... but everytime I try on a dress my godlike manly frame makes it burst at the seams.

I am not ridiculing anything Catherine. I have a FishID card -- have done REEF's fish count. My whole point was "most" girls want to see fishies in clear warm water -- and they are not drawn to the shipwrecks where the conditions are usually tougher.

Another thing to consider -- when you get to the level of doing the harder dives - you take a lot more responsibility for you gear. You aren't letting people change things over for you -- you check it and if it is functioning improperly -- you work on it. Most girls are not gearhead types and don't want to be bothered with messing around with or fixing anything.

A lot of people want diving to be easy -- putting on doubles/deco bottles -- and all the other gear associated is not the same as jumping in with a BC/Single tank. No matter how strong you are it is tough -- and no matter how some women want it to seem -- men will always have the strength advantage. If a girl is struggling with a single AL80 -- she can't imagine diving double steel tanks.

This has nothing to do with the "old boys club" and everything to do with personal choice.

He he he -- is your cute little dive skin pink??? ;)

And of course it doesn't make you a girl -- diving is about choice and thats what is so cool about the different things you can choose to do.

I was just making a point about what draws most girls to diving.

tekgirl, yes, okay, I get it. I live in a pretty small place so reality checks with the outside world are important from the middle of the pacific, from "the most isolated place on earth". you have like 50 million in your LA/OC/SD area. I have 800k or so people to observe.

My dive skin is black like the rest of my gear. It makes me feel like a ninja. When I sold my original dive knife I replaced it with a 3' katana that I use for cutting guidelines, ascent lines, and buoys when no one is watching. It is also handy for ritual seppuku.
