Very late response... he was having buoyancy issues on the reef so buddies sent him up to the dive flag. He was still hanging at the flag waiting for group they looked up then later he was gone and never found again. I haven't been diving since that ordeal.
I think he may had a problem with the bc because he having a problem on the reef which was why he surfaced.
