By the way, thanks everyone for the responses about getting certified. I finally went at lunch and signed up with a LDS. Will be a certified Diver Oct 23rd.

Anyhow just wondering as alot of the responses I got spoke of how unsafe alot of the weekend courses are and I guess especially the PADI courses. Are there alot of accidents and or deaths? I live in corn country inland in Ohio. I personally can never ever remember hearing of a dive accident or death. GRANTED I do have that lack of water thing that probably has something to do with it. Just wondering if there are statistics regarding which courses they took and even whether there are more accidents among experienced divers verse beginners. "as experienced divers are probably trying more technical dives"

There have been several deaths in my area over the past couple of years. Some were tragic accidents (like one of our former ScubaBoard members who's pictures still appear on this board). Others were the result of poor judgment and carelessness (like the DM candidate who decided to do a second dive on a tank of air, thinking to use his pony to supplement his air, but then forgot to make sure he could reach his pony reg when he needed it). Still others were due to abject stupidity (like the commercial diver trainee who, on a dare, decided to do a 200' bounce dive on an AL80 and never surfaced ... he's still down there somewhere).

None that I'm aware of are the direct result of inadequate training ... unless one considers that training should include how to make good choices ...
