Your dilema is actually financial matter, not the class contents on the given condition. :)

You should do what you think will benefit you most. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to buy a light in the near future, but if you are of the opinion this is a rare opportunity and that the cost is worth it, you should take it.

Spoon:
Guys i have a small dilemma i was set on taking tdi's advanced nitrox coupled with deco procedures in the coming months but found out that some of my tech buds invited JJ to dive tubbattaha reef and he offered to teach the tech1 and tech2 classes himself in june to our select group. what should i do? would love to dive and learn under the tutelage of JJ!
Hey Spoon,
Why don't you borrow a cannister light from Martin or Dave Ross?
(Hell, I might even consider lending you mine for this great training opportunity. . . !):D

Spoon:
pretty much but that means id have to sacrifice on the can light. what is the equivalent anyway of tech1 with TDI? if im not mistaken in tech 1 we will be using helium so thats advanced nitrox/deco procedures/triox/entry level trimix all in one. if i took all of those with TDI then id have to pay for each one. it might even be cheaper to take tech 1.
Like Diver0001 said - you'll get another chance to buy a can light.

The Tech1 class will teach/certify you what the others said.... Deco procedures, Adv Nitrox (up to 100% O2), Normoxic trimix as well as gas mixing.

I had the same dilemma as you did when I chose Tech1. I chose it partly because of the cost.... it was less expensive to take the Tech1 class than all of the corresponding TDI classes.

There was one guy in our Tech1 class (of 3 divers in the class) that had already been TDI certified. He was seriously challenged and was amazed at what he didn't know what he didn't know.... stuff that had NOT been taught in the TDI classes. In addition, the failure simulations and task loading, besides testing us and making us THINK about what we're doing, were an awesome confidence builder. Like your DIRf class, the dives are recorded on video, so you get to actually see how well or how unwell you are doing.

Another difference is the philosophy of diving as a team, rather than diving together with a buddy, but with the attitude that if there's a problem you're on your own. GUE emphasizes that if a member of the team is having a problem, the rest of the team (1 or two other divers) will actually be there to help deal with the problem if necessary.

There's a lot of emphasis on situational awareness, which includes team member awareness. In the class, we had a couple of instances where our team kind of fell apart. This was the single most detrimental mistake we could make and was the one thing that made our instructor admonish us for. Sure he pointed out other mistakes and created simulated problems if we made mistakes, like clipping a dangling bolt snap to the lift bag line :11: By the end of the week, our team had come together enough to catch these types of things and deal with them before they became actual problems :D

So anyhow, that's my experience and opinion on Tech1 vs TDI....

Either way you choose, have fun and be safe!

Kinda silly question to ask in the DIR forum.
Crappy light Vs. furthering your education with JJ. I wouldn't have a dilemma at all. :D

couldn't resist... tech 1 with Jarrod?? Spoon!! Oh definitely get that BARRY MILLER Salvo HID!!! I would love to be a fly on the wall when he sees that considering the love between JJ and Barry!!!

i would love to see the look on his face when he sees me strutting in class with an 18w salvo light:)

Guess you got the answer you knew you'd get :)

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You want a dilemma?

OK, TDI Nitrox, Adv Nitrox/Deco, Entry Trimix............and I'm still going to take Tech 1 after all this because it will absolutely be worth it to me :)

Damn, now that's a dilemma I wish I didn't have :( That's easily worth a top end HID since as far as I'm concerned, except for my Trimix training (Because of the Instructor), the rest was a waste.

Unfortunately after the fact, for me it's now GUE training or nothing at all.

Enjoy JJ you lucky dog.

Actually, regardless of what his personal feelings *may* be, I'd be willing to bet that he wouldn't say a word. Or at least that is the impression I got when I met him at the conference.
