So, I'm looking through the Discover Scuba Diving ( http://www.padi.com/padi/common/pdfs/kd/course/dsd.pdf ) instructor manual, and notice that Divemasters can do DSD's in a "confined open water" environment, but not "open water".

What is the definition of a "confined open water" environment?

Without having the book in front of me it's " a pool like environment". That is a shallow calm bay or the like.

So most easy (Ulua, Makena, on nice days) shore dives off, say, Maui, would count?

From GS&P, page 9:

“confined open water . . . is an open water site that offers swimming-pool-like conditions with respect to clarity, calmness, and depth.”

We did ours confined portion off the beach on Maui (can't remember the name of the park)...never been in a swimming pool with scuba gear on.
